TRIGOSO, PIETRO DA CALATAYUD

TRIGOSO, PIETRO da CALATAYUD. — Capuchin theologian, born at Calatayud (province of Saragossa) in June 1533, died at Naples on 20 July 1593.

He studied at the Universities of Salamanca and Alcalá de Henares, entered the Society of Jesus on 15 December 1556, and made his profession on 2 May 1568; he was professor of arts and theology and preacher at Alcalá, Toledo, and Medina del Campo. Sent to Antwerp (1570–77) as superior, he consolidated the Society in the Netherlands. During a journey from Spain to Rome (1580–81), he entered the Capuchin novitiate at Tabano (Jesi). He distinguished himself as a preacher; while preaching the Lent sermons at Ancona (1583), he established an orphanage there. The fruit of his teaching at the studium generale in Bologna, from 1585 onward, was the S. Bonaventurae summa theologica (vol. I, part 1: De Deo uno, Rome 1593, 1613; 2nd revised ed., Lyon 1686; death overtook him while he was working on the manuscript of vol. II: De Deo trino). He initiated the commentaries on the doctrine of s. Bonaventura; but rather than acting as a Bonaventurian theologian, he sought to level the thought of the Seraphic Doctor with that of s. Thomas. This conciliatory approach prevailed in the Bonaventurian school of the Order’s theologians during the seventeenth century. He combined this work with a Summa sive seminarium rerum praedicabilium (also printed separately, Paris 1612–13). In Naples, after 1587, he devoted himself to the religious assistance of the Spanish colony and established the R. Reclusorio della Solitaria di Palazzo for Spanish or Spain-born orphan girls; he organized the Monte della Misericordia with appropriate regulations.
