OTTAVIANO OF MONTICELLI (Da Montecelio, Near Tivoli). - Antipope under the name Victor IV (in reality he should be V). Son of Giovanni Maledetto, of the Monticelli family, related to the royal families of Spain and France, in 1138 he was made cardinal of the title of St. Cecilia. Celestine II, in 1143, made use of him to discuss peace with Roger II in Palermo. When the Pontiff died during the negotiations, O. was sent by the King to the newly elected Lucius II to induce him to a direct colloquy.

On the death of Adrian IV (1st week of Sept. 1159) he was elected pope by a minority of the cardinals gathered in conclave, against the legitimate Roland Bandinelli (Alexander III). Imprisoned, with the help of the imperial armed forces to whose side O. was leaning, the legitimate Pontiff, after a popular insurrection, was freed and consecrated at Ninfa on Sept. 20; while O. had himself consecrated at Farfa on Oct. 4. While almost all the States recognized Alexander III as legitimate, the Empire supported O. Barbarossa therefore convened a Synod at Pavia to proclaim his legitimacy. But toward the end of the same year even the Roman Senate sided with Alexander, who was able to return to Rome. O. died at Lucca on Apr. 20, 1164.
