30And Moses said to the children of Israel: Behold, the Lord hath called by name Beseleel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Juda,E Mosè disse a' figliuoli d'Israele: Ecco che il Signore ha chiamato per nome Beseleel figliuolo di Uri figliuolo di Hur della tribù di Giuda. And Moyses said to the children of Israel: Behold, our Lord hath called by name Beseleel the sonne of Vri the sonne of Hur of the tribe of Iuda.Dixitque Moyses ad filios Israël: Ecce, vocavit Dominus ex nomine Beseleel filium Uri, filii Hur de tribu Juda, 31And hath filled him with the spirit of God, with wisdom and understanding, and knowledge, and all learning,E lo ha ripieno dello spirito di Dio, di sapienza e d'intelligenza, e di scienza, e di ogni sapere. And hath filled him with the spirit of God, with, wisdome and intelligence, and science and allearningimplevitque eum spiritu Dei, sapientia et intelligentia, et scientia et omni doctrina, 32To devise and to work in gold and silver and brass,Per inventare, ed eseguire lavori d'oro, d'argento, e di bronzo,to deuise and to make worke in gold and siluer, and brasse,ad excogitandum, et faciendum opus in auro, et argento, et ære, 33And in engraving stones, and in carpenters’ work. Whatsoeuer can be deuised artificially, sculpendisque lapidibus, et opere carpentario, quidquid fabre adinveniri potest, 34He hath given in his heart: Ooliab also, the son of Achisamech, of the tribe of Dan:Ha dato a lui capacità, e similmente ad Ooliab figliuolo di Achisamech della tribù di Dan:he hath giuen in his hart: Ooliab also the sonne of Achisamech of the tribe of Dan:dedit in corde ejus: Ooliab quoque filium Achisamech de tribu Dan: 35Both of them hath he instructed with wisdom, to do carpenters’ work, and tapestry, and embroidery in blue and purple, and scarlet twice dyed, and fine linen, and to weave all things, and to invent all new things.Ad ambedue ha comunicato il sapere pe' lavori di legname, e pe' panni di varii colori, e pe' lavori di ricamo, e per tutto quello che si fa al telaio coll'iacinto, colla porpora, e col cocco a due tinte, e col bisso, e per inventare eziandio cose nuove.both hath he instructed with wisedome, to make the workes of a carpenter, a tapester, an embroderer of hyacinth and purple, and scarlet twise died, and silke, and to weaue al thinges, and to inuent al new things.ambos erudivit sapientia, ut faciant opera abietarii, polymitarii, ac plumarii, de hyacintho ac purpura, coccoque bis tincto, et bysso, et texant omnia, ac nova quæque reperiant.

Sabbath. The frequent repetition of this precept, cannot escape the notice of the attentive reader. The sabbath was a distinctive mark of the Jews, and was generally observed by them with the utmost care, and even with scrupulosity. (Haydock)
Tirinus
They were not allowed to do on it any thing that had the appearance of servility, if it could be avoided without serious inconveniences. But in any urgent necessity of the sick, etc., they might provide meat, and do other work, that could not be done before. They might also repel an enemy, water cattle, etc. Though a mere rest be positively ordered, the design of it shewed that the day was to be spent in religious duties, reading the Bible, etc. Josephus assures us, many were so diligent herein, as to know almost the whole law by heart. (Tirinus)
35:3
Calmet
No fire, to dress meat. The Rabbins say it is lawful to light a fire, to warm oneself, or for light. But they generally employ some other to do it for them. The Samaritans and Caraites look upon this as an evasion. (Calmet)
Haydock
It was customary to light candles and dress meat before sun-set on Friday. On other festivals, even the greatest, this was not required, as they were not instituted chiefly in memory of God's rest, as the sabbath was, Exodus 12:16. (Haydock)
35:19
Vatable
Vestments, in which the vessels of the tabernacle were folded up. (Vatable)
35:22
And women, by the hands of their husbands, as the Hebrew and Septuagint intimate.
Tablets, (dextralia) ornaments worn on the right hand or arm.
35:25
Calmet
Spun. The wool, it seems, was dyed first, unless it were naturally of these colours. See Exodus 25:5. (Calmet)
35:1
After the fall of the people to Idolatrie, their punishment, and repentāce, their reconciliation to God and new tables of the commandments made and written, Moyses repeteth the former precept, of keping the Sabbath, and prouideth al necessaries to the making of the Tabernacle, wherto the Princes and people most promptly and liberally contribute S. Aug. q. 172. in Exo.
35:30
As matter alone is not sufficient for a building without artificers, to whom God geueth special skil: so for expounding holie Scripture God geueth particular knowledge to Pastors and Doctors, to the consummation of Sainctes, to the worke of the ministerie, to the edifying of the bodie of Christ. (the Church. Ephes. 4.

Origen † AD 254 A Letter from Origen to Africanus 1
… so I have given these short references, which are sufficient for the matter before us.) And you will find the law about not bearing a burden on the Sabbath-day in Jeremias, as well as in Moses.

Pseudo-Clement The Recognitions of Clement 9.28
… But also the fact that one name is among them all, wheresoever they are, does this also come through Genesis ? And also that no child born among them is ever exposed, and that on every seventh day they all rest, wherever they may be, and do not go upon a journey, and do not use fire?
35:17
St Methodius † AD 311 Oration Concerning Simeon and Anna On the Day that They Met in the Temple 1
… the gate through which God appears in the flesh; the tongs of that cleansing coal; the bosom in small of that bosom which is all-containing; the fleece of wool, the mystery of which cannot be solved; the well of Bethlehem, that reservoir of life which David longed for, out of which the draught of immortality gushed forth; the mercy-seat
35:23
St John Chrysostom † AD 407 The Homilies of St. John Chrysostom on the Epistle to the Hebrews 32
… You know the case of the widow. It is well continually to bring this example [forward], that not even the poor man may despair of himself, when he looks on her who threw in the two mites. Some contributed even hair in the fitting up of the temple, and not even these were rejected. (

Eusebius of Caesarea † AD 339 The Church History of Eusebius 10.4.3
3. one might call thee a new Beseleel, the architect of a divine tabernacle, or Solomon, king of a new and much better Jerusalem, or also a new Zerubabel, who added a much greater glory than the former to the temple of God; —
St Gregory of Nyssa † AD 395 Against Eunomius 11.5
… For we are not wrong in saying just the same of Bezaleel, that being entrusted by Moses with the building of the tabernacle, he became the constructor of those things there
35:31
Eusebius of Caesarea † AD 339 The Church History of Eusebius 10.4.25
… the Son also doeth.’ So also this one, looking up to him as to the first teacher, with pure eyes of the mind, using as archetypes whatsoever things he seeth him doing, produceth images of them, making them so far as is possible in the same likeness, in nothing inferior to that Beseleel, whom God himself ‘filled with the spirit of wisdom and understanding’
35:2
2. THE SEVENTH DAY SHALL BE HOLY UNTO YOU, THE SABBATH, AND THE REST OF THE LORD. — Learn here how great was the care and reverence for the sabbath, which God inculcates so often here, and how great the reverence for the Lord's Day and feasts ought to be for Christians. WHOSOEVER SHALL DO WORK THEREIN, SHALL BE PUT TO DEATH. — In Hebrew, iumat, that is shall die, namely by the sentence of a judge, or by God, who in a hidden or casual manner will bring death upon him.
35:3
3. YOU SHALL NOT KINDLE A FIRE IN ALL YOUR DWELLINGS ON THE SABBATH DAY. — "Not in all," that is in none. So great was the reverence and rest of the sabbath, that on it not even a fire might be built and kindled: understand for cooking foods; for on the Passover and other feasts it was lawful to cook foods, and therefore to kindle a fire, as is evident cap. xii, vers. 16; but this was not lawful on the sabbath. Thus Abulensis, Cajetan and R. Abraham Ben Esra, against whom other Rabbis wrote a book, which they called Sabbatum, because they introduce the person of one speaking against him concerning the sabbath and condemning him as it were a heretic. For the Rabbis hold that on the sabbath it was not lawful to kindle a fire for any reason, even for cold, to warm themselves. But these seem too religious or superstitious. Whence they add, not only that fire ought not to be built on the sabbath day, but neither ought it to be struck from stone or metal, nor a lamp tended, unless perhaps on account of the infirm; and so that they never cease trifling, they interpret, if fire ought to be kindled on account of the force of cold, it ought not to be blown with a bellows, but with a reed. See here how harsh and rigid the old law of servants was, but how mild and easy the new law of sons is.
35:5
5. SEPARATE UNTO THE LORD THE FIRST-FRUITS. — "First-fruits," that is, your first oblation (for you have made none public and common hitherto), and your first gifts, which you are about to offer to the Lord for the fabrication of the tabernacle. Seek the tropology of all these gifts from St. Gregory, lib. XXX Moralium cap. x, and Origen, homilia 13. See the sayings cap. xxv. Note: God here excludes no one from his oblation and from the service of the tabernacle, however poor or miserable. For he who could not offer gold or silver could at least offer skins or goat's hair: he who could not do this could at least weave them, bring and carry them, and in other ways serve the artificers and builders of the tabernacle. Beautifully B. Aegidius, companion of St. Francis: "If," he says, "you feel grace in prayers, pray that it may be increased: if you do not feel it, do not cease on that account from prayers; for God held even goat's hair acceptable, which was offered to him according to the precept of the law."
35:8
8. AND THAT IT MAY BE MADE. — Supply: let each one offer the material prescribed in chapter xxv, namely aromata, as is said here in Hebrew, and Our version expresses vers. 28; for making the anointing oil of the priests, and for composing the incense; for incense was not made from oil, but from stacte, onycha, galbanum and frankincense. There was therefore oil for the lamps: and there was oil in the anointing oil of the priests and the tabernacle. For this oil was made from myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia and olive oil. See Exodus xxx, 23 and seq.
35:10
10. WHOSOEVER IS WISE, — whosoever is skilled and industrious in his craft. AND LET HIM MAKE WHAT THE LORD HATH COMMANDED, THE TABERNACLE NAMELY, AND ITS ROOF, AND ITS COVERING. — "Tabernacle" he calls the Sanctuary itself covered with ten curtains, made of fine linen, purple, scarlet and hyacinth, veiled and covered, which in Hebrew is called miscan. "Roof" truly, which in Hebrew is called ohel, he calls the second veil, or linen cloth, which was made of goat's hair. Finally "covering," which in Hebrew is called michse, he calls the third veil of skins of rams dyed red, and the fourth of violet skins. Thus Cajetan and Lipomanus.
35:11
Vers. 11. BOARDS, — boards joined together like a floor, and that on three sides of the tabernacle; for the floor was indeed in length, or the joining of boards, thirty cubits, but in width the floor was ten cubits. PINS. — In Hebrew columns, which here by our author are called pins, because they were small, and had pointed bases like pins, so that they could be driven into the ground; or certainly he comprehends them under the pins: for pins were fastened to the columns, and from the pins the veils were suspended.
35:17
Vers. 17. TENT, — that is, a veil.
35:25
25. AND ALSO LEARNED WOMEN, WHO SPUN, GAVE. — "Learned," that is, skilled in spinning and wise craftswomen, namely spinners and weavers; for this is the learning and wisdom of women. HYACINTH, — spun or thread of hyacinth, namely violet wool. Thus also understand purple, scarlet and fine linen, not wool or linen, but spun, or the warp of such wool or linen.
35:29
29. VOLUNTARY, — free and spontaneous gifts.
35:34
34. GAVE IN HIS HEART. — That is, he taught him, or "gave in his heart," understand knowledge, or rather art and knowledge, and the practical skill of making, sewing, weaving, etc. In Hebrew it is, and to teach he gave in his heart, that is, he taught him so perfectly that he could also teach others. Others translate it, he made him easy and inclined to teach others. Contrary to what most distinguished craftsmen do, who with great difficulty communicate their arts and practices to others, and allow them to die with themselves, and thus both deprive themselves of merit and glory, and the commonwealth of their benefits and ornaments. AND OOLIAB ALSO. — Understand what he said of Beseleel his companion, namely, he called and filled with wisdom.
35:35
35. TO MAKE THE WORKS OF A CARPENTER. — In Hebrew, to make the works of a craftsman, namely a carpenter, as I said above. EMBROIDERERS AND WEAVERS. — Here he distinguishes these two, which above he used indifferently, so that namely the embroiderer or weaver is he who paints variously with a needle: the weaver, or, as it is in Hebrew, one who thinks thoughts, is he who with ingenious weaving weaves and forms various things, as is done in tapestries. Thus Abulensis and Lipomanus.
