Ad Sacram beati Petri Sedem
Bull confirming the condemnation of the five Jansenist propositions
Confirmation and Declaration of the Constitution of Pope Innocent X, by which five propositions excerpted from the book of Cornelius Jansenius, Bishop of Ypres, entitled Augustinus, were condemned.
Alexander, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to all Christian faithful, greeting and apostolic benediction.
1 Raised to the holy seat of blessed Peter and to the governance of the universal Church by the inscrutable disposition of divine providence, with no merits of our own contributing thereto, we have deemed nothing more urgent from the duty of our office than to provide opportunely, by the power entrusted to us by God, for the integrity of our holy faith and of the sacred dogmas. And although those matters which were abundantly defined by apostolic constitutions have need of no addition of new decision or declaration, nevertheless, because certain disturbers of public tranquility do not fear to call them into question or to weaken them by crafty interpretations, we have judged that the ready remedy of apostolic authority ought not to be deferred, lest this disease spread more widely.
2 § 1. There was issued formerly by our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Innocent X, a constitution, declaration and definition of the tenor which follows, namely: Innocent, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to all Christian faithful, greeting and apostolic benediction.
3 Since, upon the occasion of the printing of the book entitled Augustinus by Cornelius Jansenius, Bishop of Ypres, there arose, among other opinions of his, a controversy especially in the Gallic regions concerning five of them; many bishops of the Gallic regions petitioned us that we should examine those same propositions laid before us, and should render a certain and clear judgment concerning each one of them. The tenor of the aforesaid propositions is as follows:
4 First. Some commandments of God are impossible to just men who will and strive according to the present powers which they have: and grace is lacking to them by which they might become possible;
5 Second. Interior grace in the state of fallen nature is never resisted.
6 Third. In the state of fallen nature, freedom from necessity is not required in man for merit and demerit, but freedom from coercion suffices.
7 Fourth. The Semipelagians admitted the necessity of interior prevenient grace for individual acts, even for the beginning of faith, and in this they were heretics, in that they wished that grace to be such as could be resisted or obeyed by human will. Fifth. It is Semipelagian to say that Christ died for all men absolutely, or shed His blood for all.
8 § 2. We, to whom, among manifold cares which press upon our office continually.
9 1 Although the following Constitution of Innocent X is already contained in vol. xv, p. 720; nevertheless on account of the gravity of the matter, we reproduce it again with the Mainardi edition (editor's note).
10 that matter is especially dear to our heart, that the Church of God committed to us from on high, purged of the errors of depraved opinions, may wage war safely, and like a ship on a calm sea, with all tempests and storms quieted, may navigate securely and reach the desired port of salvation. On account of the gravity of the matter, we caused those same five propositions, as set forth above, to be examined carefully and individually before certain cardinals of the Holy Roman Church gathered for this purpose, by several masters in sacred theology; and we carefully considered their votes both spoken and written, and we heard those same masters in various congregations held before us, discussing at length concerning those propositions and concerning each one of them. Since from the beginning of such discussion we had enjoined the prayers of many Christian faithful, both privately and publicly, to implore divine aid, and afterwards, with the same fervent prayers repeated and the assistance of the Holy Spirit diligently implored by us, finally, with divine favor, we have arrived at the underwritten declaration and definition.
11 § 3. The first of the aforesaid propositions we condemn:
12 "Some commandments of God are impossible to just men who will and strive according to the present powers which they have, and grace is lacking to them by which they might become possible": we declare to be rash, impious, blasphemous, damned by anathema and heretical, and we condemn it as such. The second: "Interior grace in the state of fallen nature is never resisted": we declare to be heretical, and we condemn it as such. The third: "In the state of fallen nature, freedom from necessity is not required in man for merit and demerit, but freedom from coercion suffices": we declare to be heretical, and we condemn it as such. The fourth: "The Semipelagians admitted the necessity of interior prevenient grace for individual acts, even for the beginning of faith, and in this they were heretics, in that they wished that grace to be such as could be resisted or obeyed by human will": we declare to be false and heretical, and we condemn it as such.
13 1 The fervent prayers should be read for the prayers (editor's note). 2 The Mainardi edition has "by Divine Numen" (editor's note). 3 In the place prepared, we have given the underwritten (editor's note).
14 We declare to be heretical, and condemn as such, the following: Third: "In the state of fallen nature, freedom from necessity is not required in man, but freedom from coercion suffices"; we declare to be heretical, and condemn as such. Fourth: "The Semipelagians admitted the necessity of interior prevenient grace for individual acts, even for the beginning of faith, and in this they were heretical, in that they wished that grace to be of such a kind as human will could resist or obey": we declare to be false and heretical, and condemn as such.
15 Fifth: "It is Semipelagian to say that Christ died for absolutely all men, or shed his blood": we declare to be false, rash, scandalous, and, understood in the sense that Christ died for the salvation of the predestined alone, impious, blasphemous, contumacious, derogatory to divine mercy, and heretical, and we condemn it as such.
16 § 4. We therefore command all the faithful of Christ of both sexes, that they presume not to think, teach, or preach otherwise concerning the said propositions than is contained in this present declaration and definition of ours, under the censures and penalties against heretics and their supporters expressed in law. We likewise enjoin upon all patriarchs, archbishops, bishops, and other Ordinaries of places, as well as upon inquisitors of heretical depravity, that they altogether restrain and suppress any and all contradictors and rebels by the aforesaid censures and penalties, and by other remedies of law and fact as appropriate, invoking also to this end, if need be, the aid of the secular arm. Not intending, however, by this declaration and definition made concerning the aforesaid five propositions, to approve in any way whatsoever other opinions which are contained in the aforesaid book of Cornelius Jansenius. Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord 1653, on the day before the Kalends of June, in the ninth year of our pontificate.

4 Prima. Alcuni precetti di Dio sono impossibili agli uomini giusti che vogliono e si sforzano secondo le forze presenti che hanno; inoltre manca loro la grazia per cui diventino possibili;
5 Seconda.
