Apostolic Letter convoking the First Vatican Council and inviting the Eastern Churches

Apostolic letter of Pope Pius IX ·

IX. APOSTOLIC LETTERS.
To the Bishops of Eastern Churches not in communion with the Apostolic See.
PIUS PP. IX.

1 « By the hidden counsel of Divine Providence, though without any merits of Our own, constituted as heirs in this sublime Chair of the most blessed Prince of the Apostles, who according to the prerogative granted to him by God is the firm and most solid rock upon which the Saviour built His Church (1), pressed by the solicitude of the burden imposed upon Us, We desire most earnestly and strive to extend Our cares to all those dwelling in any region of the world who are counted in the Christian name, and to call all to the embrace of paternal charity. Nor indeed can We without grave peril to Our soul neglect any part of the Christian people, who, redeemed by the most precious blood of Our Saviour and admitted into the Lord's flock by the sacred waters of baptism, justly demands all Our vigilance. Therefore, since We ought to direct all Our studies and thoughts without ceasing to the salvation of all who acknowledge and adore Christ Jesus, We turn Our eyes and paternal heart to those Churches, which once joined to this Apostolic See by the bond of unity flourished with such great holiness and heavenly doctrine, and bore abundant fruits of divine glory and the salvation of souls, but now through the wicked arts and ma(1) S. APOSTOLIC LETTERS.

2 chinations of him who first stirred up schism in heaven, are separated and divided from the communion of the Holy Roman Church, which is spread throughout the whole world, with the greatest sorrow to Us. » For this very reason from the very beginning of Our supreme Pontificate We have spoken words of peace and charity to you with all the affection of Our heart (1). Although indeed these words of Ours have not obtained the most desired outcome, yet the hope has never left Us that the most merciful and benign Author of salvation and peace would deign to hear Our humble and fervent prayers with favour, He who wrought salvation in the midst of the earth, and rising from on high, clearly showing peace acceptable to Himself and to be accepted by all, announced it in His rising through the ministry of Angels to men of good will, and conversing among men taught it by word, preached it by example (2).

3 »Now indeed, since recently by the counsel of Our Venerable Brethren the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church We have appointed and convoked an Ecumenical Synod to be celebrated in Rome in the coming year, and to be begun on the eighth day of the month of December, sacred to the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God the Virgin Mary, We direct Our voice to you again, and with the greatest earnestness of which We are capable We beseech, admonish and entreat you, that you be willing to come to the same general Synod, just as your Forefathers came to the Council of Lyons II held by Our Predecessor of blessed memory B. Gregory X, and to the Council of Florence celebrated by Our Predecessor of happy memory Eugene IV, so that with the laws of ancient charity renewed, and the peace of the Fathers, that heavenly and saving gift of Christ which had withered in time, being likewise restored to vigour (3), after the long mist of sorrow and the dark and ungrateful darkness of prolonged dissension, the serene light of the desired union may shine forth upon all (4). » And let this be the most joyful fruit of blessing by which Christ Jesus our Lord and Redeemer may console His immaculate and most beloved Spouse the Catholic Church, and may temper and wipe away her tears in the harshness of times, so that, all division being utterly removed, voices once discordant may praise God with perfect unanimity of spirit, who wills not that there be schisms among us, but that we all say and feel the same thing, as the Apostle commanded; and immortal thanks may always be rendered to the Father of mercies by all His Saints, and especially by those most glorious ancient Patriarchs and Doctors of the Eastern Churches, as they look down from heaven upon the restored and renewed conjunction with this Apostolic See, the centre of Catholic truth and unity, which they themselves while living on earth strove to foster and daily to promote more and more both by doctrine and by example, charity diffused in their hearts through the Holy Spirit of Him who broke down the middle wall of partition, and through His Blood reconciled and made peace with all things, who willed that the sign of His disciples be in unity, and whose Prayer poured out to the Father is: I pray that all may be one, as We also are one. » Given at Rome at St. Peter's on 8 September in the year 1868. In the twenty-third year of Our Pontificate. »

APOSTOLIC LETTERS.

4 be comforted, and may He temper and wipe away tears in the harshness of times, so that, with all division utterly removed, voices formerly discordant may with perfect unanimity of spirit praise God together, Who wills not that there be schisms among us, but that we all say and feel the same thing, as the Apostle commanded by his voice; and immortal thanksgivings for mercies may ever be rendered to the Father by all His Saints, and especially by those most glorious ancient Patriarchs and Doctors of the Eastern Churches, as they look down from heaven upon the restored and renewed conjunction with this Apostolic See, the center of Catholic truth and unity, which they themselves while living on earth strove with all zeal and unwearied labors to foster and to promote more and more each day both by doctrine and by example, charity being poured forth in their hearts through the Holy Spirit of Him Who broke down the middle wall of partition, and through His Blood reconciled and pacified all things, Who willed that the sign of His disciples be in unity, and whose Prayer poured forth to the Father is: "I pray that all may be one, as We also are one." IX. LETTERE APOSTOLICHE.

» Dato a Roma presso San Pietro l'8 settembre dell'anno 1868. Del Nostro Pontificato l'anno ventitreesimo. »
