Si quid est
Bull on the correction and publication of the Roman Missal
1 If there is anything in human affairs that is truly divine, which the citizens of heaven (were envy to befall them) might envy, it is certainly the most holy Sacrifice of the Mass, by whose benefit it comes to pass that men possess heaven on earth in a certain anticipation, while they have before their eyes and handle with their hands the very Creator of heaven and earth. For this reason mortals must labor all the more to protect this so great privilege with fitting worship and honor, and to beware of angels who are haters of negligence, who are rivals of veneration. Hence it came to pass that We, following in the footsteps of Our predecessors, the Supreme Pontiffs Pius V and Clement VIII, who most diligently caused the manner of celebrating this sacred mystery and the prayers to be reviewed and restored, have likewise ordered that these be examined again, and if perchance the course of time (which usually happens) has corrupted anything in them, that it be restored. Wherefore, just as We recently ordered the Breviary to be reformed for the splendor of the divine Office, so now by this example We have ordered the Missal to be corrected for the adornment of the divine Sacrifice.
2 And since it is fitting that these wings, as it were, which the Priest, like the Cherubim of the ancient mystical Tabernacle, unfolds daily toward the true Mercy Seat of the world, should be twin and uniform, We have entrusted the care of this matter to learned and pious men, whose diligence has so perfected the work that nothing more can be desired. For the rubrics, which gradually had degenerated from ancient use and practice, have been restored to their original state; those, however, which did not seem sufficiently adapted to the understanding of readers have been explained more clearly: moreover, all things have been compared with the text of Holy Scripture in the Vulgate edition, and whatever variations had crept in have been corrected according to that one exemplar and standard. Yet the diligence of correctors is usually of little avail unless there be joined to it equal industry on the part of printers; for this reason We have commanded our beloved son Andrew Brugiotto, Prefect of Our Apostolic Press, to bring forth the Missal thus purged into the light: but those which hereafter shall happen to be printed outside the City, We permit to be printed in no other way than according to the exemplar now published in the said Press: provided, however, that permission be first sought and obtained in writing from our beloved sons the Inquisitors of heretical depravity in those places where they exist, and where they do not exist, from the Ordinaries of those places; otherwise, if they shall presume hereafter to print the said Missal without such permission, or booksellers to sell it, printers and booksellers existing outside Our Ecclesiastical State shall incur the penalty of excommunication latae sententiae, from which, except by the Roman Pontiff, they cannot be absolved save at the point of death; but those dwelling in the Eternal City and the rest of the Ecclesiastical State shall incur without any other declaration the irremissible penalties of five hundred gold ducats from the Camera, and the loss of all books and types, to be applied to the aforesaid Camera, by that very fact: and We nevertheless interdict and prohibit everywhere and among all peoples the use of the same Missals printed by them hereafter without such license, or sold, under the same penalties.
3 The Inquisitors themselves, or the Ordinaries of those places, before they grant such license and faculty, shall most diligently compare the Missals to be printed by the printers themselves, and after they have been printed, with this Missal recognized by Our authority, and shall permit nothing to be added to or taken from them. In obtaining the original license itself, they shall attest with their own hand that the comparison has been made and that they are in complete agreement: a copy of which license shall always be printed at the beginning or end of each Missal. But if they act otherwise, the Inquisitors shall incur the penalties of deprivation of their offices and of incapacity for those and other offices to be obtained hereafter; the Ordinaries of those places, however, shall incur suspension from the divine offices and interdict from entering the Church; their Vicars likewise shall incur deprivation of their offices and benefices and incapacity for those and other benefices to be obtained hereafter, and moreover excommunication without any other declaration.
4 Moreover, having regard from Apostolic benignity to the relief of poor churches, clerics, and ecclesiastical persons, and printers and booksellers of every kind, We likewise permit and grant to those same persons having Missals heretofore printed in their possession, that they may retain them, use them, and sell them respectively. Notwithstanding any licenses, indults, and privileges whatsoever granted to printers by Us or by Our Roman Pontiff predecessors for printing the Missal, which by these presents We expressly revoke and will to be revoked, and also notwithstanding Apostolic constitutions and ordinances, general or special, granted, approved, and confirmed in any way to the contrary of the foregoing. All of which, even if special, specific, and express mention ought to be made of them and their entire tenor, We, holding the tenor of these present as expressed, do on this occasion specially and expressly derogate from.
5 We will, however, that to copies of these presents, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of some public Notary and furnished with the seal of some person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith be given as would be given to these presents themselves, if they were exhibited or shown. Given at Rome at St. Mary Major under the Fisherman's Ring, on the second day of September 1634, in the twelfth year of Our Pontificate.
