Pietatis et christianae charitatis
Bolla di approvazione perpetua della Congregazione dei musici di Roma sotto l'invocazione di s. Cecilia
a perpetua memoria della cosa.
1 Desiderando che le opere di pietà e di carità cristiana siano esercitate ovunque con incremento del culto divino, per questo motivo, alle cose che si dice siano state fatte piamente e prudentemente, volentieri, quando da noi viene richiesto, aggiungiamo la fermezza dell'animo apostolico, e i fedeli di Cristo, affinché siano maggiormente confortati nell'esercizio di quelle stesse opere pie, li prosequiamo con favori e grazie opportune, come vediamo che conviene salutarmente nel Signore. Una confraternita eretta precedentemente di musicisti, diletti figli ufficiali e confratelli della medesima, della fraternità denominata dei Musicisti, sotto le invocazioni della Visitazione della Beata Maria Vergine e di san Gregorio Papa e di santa Cecilia, la quale altra confraternita predetta nella chiesa di san Paolo dei Chierici Regolari della Congregazione del medesimo san Paolo Decollato, e secondo i Statuti per essa editi, in altra chiesa della nostra alma Città fu canonicamente eretta e istituita;
6 § 6. Inoltre, affinché gli ufficiali e i confraConfirma Urbano.

to perpetual memory of the matter.
1 Desiring that works of piety and Christian charity be exercised everywhere with increase of divine worship, we therefore willingly add the firmness of apostolic authority to those things which are said to have been done piously and prudently, when they are requested of us, and we pursue the faithful of Christ with fitting favors and graces, so that they may be more encouraged in the exercise of these same pious works, as we perceive it to be salutary in the Lord to expedite. A confraternity having been erected aforetime— § 1. Indeed, it was recently set forth to us by our beloved sons, the officials and confratres of the same confraternity, called the Confraternity of Musicians, under the invocations of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of St. Gregory the Pope and St. Cecilia, that this same confraternity was canonically erected and instituted in the church of St. Paul of the Clerks Regular of the Congregation of the same St. Paul Beheaded, or under the statutes issued for it, in another church of our beloved City;
2 § 2. And, for its happy and prosperous direction and governance, certain statutes were drawn up, and these were approved by our beloved son, the vicar general in spiritual matters in the said City, as is more fully contained in the public documents drawn up concerning this matter.
3 Are apostolically approved and confirmed, and the aforesaid officials and confratres desire, therefore, that the erection and institution and the aforesaid statutes be strengthened by the patronage of apostolic confirmation, and that other things be granted to them by us:
4 § 4. We, being willing to accede to their wishes in the foregoing matters, as much as we can with the Lord, and to pursue them with special favors and graces, and absolving their individual persons from any excommunications, suspensions and interdicts, and other ecclesiastical sentences, censures and penalties, whether by law or by man, imposed for any occasion or cause whatsoever, if they are bound by any of these in any way, for the purpose of obtaining the effect of these presents only, and considering them absolved by this series of documents, inclined by their supplications humbly presented to us in their name concerning this matter, we perpetually approve and confirm by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, the aforesaid erection and institution, insofar as they were canonically made, as is aforesaid, and also the aforesaid statutes, provided however that they are lawful and honest, and do not run counter to the sacred canons, and the decrees of the Council of Trent, and apostolic constitutions, and we add to them the strength of inviolable apostolic firmness, and we supply all and singular defects both of law and of fact, if any have intervened concerning this matter in any way whatsoever.
5 § 5. And to the same officials and confratres, we grant and impart license and faculty, so that they may freely and lawfully be able to change, alter, correct and reform for the better these statutes according to the variety of times, as it shall seem better and more expedient to them, and also to draw up new ones, provided however that the same vicar first examines and approves them.
6 § 6. Moreover, so that the officials and confra- Confirms Urban.
7 Prohibits, lest without the license of the revisers— § 3. Since, however, as the same exposition added, those things are more firm which are confirmed by the Apostolic See (R.T.). The aforesaid confratres seek to be confirmed in the exercise of pious works of this confraternity, and the temerity of some is to be restrained, musical compositions are to be published by type, or schools of music are to be opened, He grants spiritual graces to confratres who, with no, or at least unpolished, studies or laws of this art of music being observed, do not fear to publish publicly in print, to all and singular of both sexes Christian faithful, and especially to printers of books and booksellers, under a penalty of five hundred ducats of gold of the camera, for our apostolic camera, and for another part to the same confraternity, and for the remaining third parts to the accuser and the judge executing, to be irremissibly applied, incurred by the very fact, without any declaration, lest henceforth in the City any musical compositions whatsoever, both their own and those of others, and motets of any kind and species existing, already composed by any experts of the same art, and henceforth to be composed and printed, or to be sent to the City itself for the purpose of printing, without obtaining in writing the special license of the correctors or revisers appointed by the same confraternity, which however ought to be granted freely, be printed, or sold or had for sale by another or others, or proposed in any way whatsoever, we interdict and prohibit.
8 § 7. To these matters (and so that the unskilled be in no way admitted to open public schools of this art of music in the said City) we grant and indulge to the said confraternity, that henceforth all and singular, whether clerics or laypeople, wishing to open schools of this art of music in the said City and to teach music publicly in them, seek and obtain license in writing from the same deputies and furnished with the seal of the same confraternity, which ought to be granted freely, by authority and by the tenor of these presents.
9 § 8. Finally, so that the said confraternity may receive ever greater increase, trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, to all and each of the Christian faithful who shall hereafter enter the said confraternity, on the first day of their entry, if indeed they be penitent and confessed and shall have received the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, a plenary 1 2
10 § 9. Likewise now and for the time being to the brothers described and to be described in the said confraternity, at the moment of death of each of them, if they are truly penitent and have confessed, and have been refreshed with holy communion, or, insofar as they are unable to do this, at least contrite and invoking the name of Jesus, by mouth if they are able, but if not then by heart, we grant a plenary [indulgence];
11 likewise.
12 § 40. And to the same brothers now and for the time being existing, even truly penitent and confessed, and refreshed by the same holy communion, who shall devoutly visit the church or chapel or oratory of the aforesaid confraternity on the feast day of St. Cecilia from first Vespers until the setting of the sun of such feast each year, and shall there pour forth pious prayers to God for the concord of Christian princes, the extirpation of heretics, and the exaltation of holy Mother Church, we mercifully grant and bestow in the Lord a plenary remission and forgiveness likewise of all their sins.
13 § 41. Moreover to the said brothers, even truly penitent and confessed, and refreshed by holy communion, visiting the church or chapel or oratory of this kind on the feast days of the Visitation of the blessed Virgin Mary, and of the holy Guardian Angels, and of the holy Popes Gregory and Leo II, as aforesaid, and praying therein, on the day on which they shall have done this, seven years and as many quarantines;
14 § 12. Whenever indeed they shall have been present at Masses and other divine offices to be celebrated and recited in the said church or chapel or oratory for the time being, or at public or private congregations of the same confraternity to be held anywhere, or shall have received the poor in a hospice, or shall have made peace between enemies or caused or procured it to be made, and also those who shall have accompanied the bodies of the deceased, both of the brothers and sisters of the said confraternity and of others, to burial, and shall have accompanied any processions to be made by license of the Ordinary with the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, both in processions and when it is borne to the sick or elsewhere anywhere and in any manner for the time being, or, if hindered, shall have said once the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary at the signal of the bell given for this, or even shall have recited the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary five times for the souls of the deceased brothers and sisters of the said confraternity, or shall have brought back some wanderer to the way of salvation, and shall have taught the ignorant the precepts of God and those things which pertain to salvation, or shall have exercised any other work of piety or charity, as many times for each of the aforesaid works we remit sixty days of the penances enjoined upon them or otherwise due in any manner in the form customary in the Church. These presents to be valid in perpetuity for all future times.
15 § 13. We will, however, that if we have granted to the said brothers performing the aforesaid any indulgence, lasting perpetually or for a time not yet elapsed, these presents shall be null.
16 Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, under the Fisherman's Ring, on 20 November 1624, in the second year of our pontificate. Given on 20 November 1624, pontifical year 1.
