APPEL, JOHANNES. — Born at Grünsfeld in 1645, died in Rome in 1700. Ordained a priest at Würzburg, from 1680 onward he resided in Rome as procurator of the Bartolomites and rector of the Domus concertendorum. In 1649 he was elected superior general of the Congregation. Much esteemed by Innocent XI, he rendered distinguished service to the Order, which during his generalate spread widely throughout Italy (especially Sicily), Austria, Germany, Poland, Spain, France, and South America.
