APPEL, JOHANNES. - Born at Grünsfeld in 1645, died at Rome in 1700. Ordained priest at Würzburg, he resided in Rome from 1680 onwards as procurator of the Bartholomites and rector of the Domus conventendorum. In 1649 he was elected general of the Congregation. Very dear to Innocent XI, he was a benefactor of the Order, which during his generalship spread widely in Italy (especially Sicily), Austria, Germany, Poland, Spain, France, and South America.
