LOUIS BERTRAND (Bertrand), Saint. - Dominican, b. in Valencia on 1 Jan. 1526, d. there on 9 Oct. 1581. A religious in his native city from 1544 (26 Aug.), a priest in 1547 (23 Oct.), master of novices (of whom he is now the patron) in Valencia (1545-51), then (during the plague) vicar at Albaida (1551-60), and then again master of novices (1560-62).

Having heard of the sad conditions of the Indians, exploited by the Spanish conquerors, he wished to set out as a missionary. He fulfilled his apostolic desire by reaching Nova Granada (Colombia) in 1562, of which he would be the apostle. For 7 years he was in Colombia and pushed as far as the Lesser Antilles, devoting himself to the defense and conversion of the natives. He gave Baptism to many thousands of Indians. But after seven years of preaching rich in miracles, being unable to endure any longer the abuses of Spanish domination, he returned to Spain (18 Oct. 1569), was prior at S. Onofrio (1570-73), then again master of novices (1574-75), and finally prior at Valencia (1575-78). Very fond of penance, he mortified his body, preached with great zeal, and worked miracles during his life. He was beatified by Paul V (29 July 1608) and canonized by Clement X (12 Apr. 1671). Feast on 10 Oct.
