DANIELE CONCINA. — Dominican preacher and moralist, born at Clauzetto in Friuli on 2 Oct. 1687, died at Venice on 21 Feb. 1756. He entered the religious order at Conegliano on 16 March 1708, studied in Venice, taught philosophy and theology at Cividale (1717–20), and preached in the principal cities of Italy. A model religious and acclaimed preacher, of keen and lively intelligence, from 1730 he lived a life of continual controversy (v. vow of poverty, fasting, probabilism, and mutual insurance). He particularly fought against laxism and probabilism. In various opinions (mutual insurance, theatre, etc.) he was rigorist.
Among his many writings the following are noteworthy: *Commentarius historico-apologeticus* etc. (Venice 1736; on the vow of poverty, against the Bollandists and Raffaele da Pornasio); *La Quaresima appellante* etc. (ibid. 1739; on fasting); *In Epistolam Benedicti XIV adversus usuram Commentarius* (Rome 1746); *Usura contractus trini* (ibid. 1746); *Storia del probabilismo e del rigorismo* (Lucca 1743); *Theologia christiana dogmatico-moralis* (12 vols., Rome 1749, various editions); *De Spectaculis theatralibus* (ibid. 1752); *Difesa della Compagnia di Gesù* (Venice 1767). Each of these works provoked replies and counter-replies.
