CONCINA, DANIELE. - Dominican preacher and moralist, b. at Clauzetto in Friuli on 2 Oct. 1687, d. at Venice on 21 Feb. 1756. He entered the religious life at Conegliano on 16 March 1708, studied at Venice, taught philosophy and theology at Cividale (1717-20), and preached in the principal cities of Italy. An exemplary religious and an acclaimed preacher, of acute and lively intelligence, from 1730 he spent his life in continual controversies (vow of poverty, fasting, probabilism and mutuum). He struggled particularly against laxism and probabilism. In various opinions (mutuum, the theater, etc.) he is a rigorist.
Among his many writings are remembered: Commentarius historico-apologeticus etc. (Venice 1736; on the vow of poverty, against the Bollandists and Raffaele da Pornasio); La Quaresima appellante etc. (ibid. 1739; on fasting); In Epistolam Benedicti XIV adversus usuram Commentarius (Rome 1746); Usura contractus trini (ibid. 1746); Storia del probabilismo e del rigorismo (Lucca 1743); Theologia christiana dogmatico-moralis (12 vols., Rome 1749, various editions); De Spectaculis theatralibus (ibid. 1752); Difesa della Compagnia di Gesù (Venice 1767). Each of these works provoked replies and counter-replies.
