DURAZZO, MARCELLO. - Cardinal, born in Genoa of a noble family on 6 March 1630, died in Faenza on 27 April 1710. After having been vice-legate of Bologna and governor of various cities, he was sent as nuncio to Portugal (1673), where he remained twelve years, managing to maneuver very well, even during the disagreements that Pope Innocent XI had with that kingdom.

In 1685 he was transferred to the nunciature of Spain, where the appointment as cardinal of the title of St. Prisca (2 Sept. 1686) reached him, later changed (1701) to that of St. Peter in Chains. Bishop of Carpentras in 1688, he came to Rome only the following year and did not wish to accept the bishopric of Ferrara because it was burdened with 8000 scudi. On 27 Aug. 1691 he received the bishopric of Spoleto, which he renounced (1695) for the legation of Bologna. On 11 Nov. 1697 he became bishop of Faenza. He was judged wise, prudent and of excellent morals, although his enemies accused him of greed for wealth.
