GIORDANO DA PISA, Blessed. - Distinguished Dominican preacher, b. at Pisa (or at Rivalto?) around 1260, d. at Piacenza on 19 Aug. 1311.
He took the religious habit in the Pisan convent of S. Caterina (1280). There he began his studies, which he continued at Bologna and completed at Paris. He traveled in France, England and Germany; at the General Chapter of Cologne in 1301 he was a definitor. He taught at Pisa, lectured on the Sentences of Lombard at S. Maria Novella in Florence, and had finally been assigned to teach at Paris, when death surprised him on the journey.
More than as a professor, he left a name as a preacher. He spoke at Pisa and at Florence two, three and even five times a day. Of his Latin or vernacular sermons, collected by his hearers, only a part saw print. Notable are those in the vernacular, which for their purity of language are a monument of Italian literature, from both the philological and the literary point of view.
A testimony of his zeal is the foundation of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Savior, called del Crocione, of Pisa, with the purpose of leading men to a more intense religious life. Gregory XVI on 23 Aug. 1833 confirmed its cult. Feast on 6 March.
