GONZÁLEZ y DIAZ TUÑON, ZEFIRINO. - Neo-scholastic philosopher, Dominican, restorer of Thomism in Spain, b. at Villoria (Asturias) on 28 Jan. 1831, d. at Madrid on 29 Nov. 1894. He studied at Manila (Philippines) at the University of S. Tommaso, where he subsequently became professor (from 1857). Having returned to Spain, he taught at the College of Ocaña (1868-71). Appointed bishop of Malaga (1873), the following year he was transferred to the see of Cordova, then (1883) to the archiepiscopal see of Siviglia, and finally, having been made cardinal (1884), to that of Toledo (1885), becoming primate of Spain. Returning, for reasons of health, to the see of Siviglia (1886), he resigned it in 1889.
