LADISLAO, saint - Sienese panel of the 14th century - Altamente, church of the Consolazione.
LADISLAUS, King of Hungary and Croatia, Saint. - Patron of Transylvania. Born in Poland in 1040, died at Nitra in Slovakia on 29 July 1095. Son of Bela I and brother of King Andrew I. In 1077 he was elected king of Hungary.
After occupying Croatia and Dalmatia, in 1092 he had the Cathedral built at Varadino and founded the archdiocese of Zagreb. In 1083 he obtained the canonization of St. Stephen and St. Emeric. He convoked the Synod of Szabolcz for the purpose of intensifying religious life. Inspired by Christian doctrine, he continued the work of his predecessors St. Stephen and St. Emeric, further elaborating the conception of a Hungarian ChristianState, but he opposed requests to make Hungary a vassal State of the Holy See. He was canonized in 1192 by Pope Celestine III. Feast on 27 June.
