ARTHUR MARTIN. - Jesuit, archaeologist, b. 4 Sept. 1801 at Auray (Morbihan), d. at Ravenna 24 Nov. 1856.
Admitted to the Society of Jesus on 28 Sept. 1819 at Montrouge, he completed his novitiate in Rome; returning to France he was proscribed with the Jesuits by the government and devoted himself to preaching in various dioceses of France and in Valais. Later, drawn to the study of Christian monuments, together with Fr C. Cahier he published the *Monographie de la cathédrale de Bourges* (Paris 1841-44) and the *Mélanges d'archéologie, d'histoire et de littérature* (ibid. 1848-56), containing articles on the enamels of Aix-la-Chapelle and Cologne, on illuminated manuscripts, on ivories from Bamberg, Ratisbon, Munich, Paris, London etc., on Byzantine fabrics, on paintings, on Carolingian and Romanesque reliefs. He also published minor works on his own, contributing to the revival of the study of ancient Christian monuments.
