The diocese has an area of 3,000 sq. km. with a population of 102,000 inhabitants, all Catholic; it has 34 parishes with 60 diocesan priests and 8 regulars, 2 male and 20 female religious
The diocese of Galtellì was created in 1138 by Pope Innocent II as a suffragan of Pisa, and was confirmed as such by Alexander III in 1161 and by Innocent III in 1198. Alexander VI, however, suppressed it and united it to Cagliari. On July 21, 1779 Pope Pius VI, with the bull Eam inter caeteras, re-erected the diocese of Galtellì as a suffragan of Cagliari, annexing N. to it and fixing the residence in the latter see. On Jan. 27, 1928 the Sacred Consistorial Congregation changed the name of the diocese to that of N.
The first bishop of the diocese of Galtellì was Bishop Bernardo, who occupied the episcopal see in 1138; the first of the reconstituted diocese of Galtellì-N. by Pius VI was Bishop G. A. Serra-Urru.
The Cathedral is consecrated to Our Lady of the Snows.
