NUORO, DIOCESE OF. – City and diocese of Sardinia, suffragan of Cagliari.
The diocese has an area of 3,000 sq. km. with a population of 102,000, all Catholic; it comprises 34 parishes with 60 diocesan priests and 8 regular priests, 2 male and 20 female religious communities, a major and a minor seminary (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 292).
NUORO – NEW ALLIANCE
Nuoro, diocese of – Sanctuary of the waters – Springs.
The diocese of Galtelli was established in 1738 by Pope Innocent III as a suffragan of Pisa, and was confirmed as such by Alexander III in 1161 and by Innocent III in 1198. Alexander VI, however, suppressed it and united it to Cagliari. On 21 July 1779, Pope Pius VI, with the bull *Eam inter caeteras*, re-established the diocese of Galtelli as a suffragan of Cagliari, attaching Nuoro to it and fixing the episcopal see in the latter city. On 27 January 1928, the Sacred Consistorial Congregation changed the name of the diocese to that of Nuoro.
The first bishop of the diocese of Galtelli was Msgr. Bernardo, who occupied the see in 1138; the first of the reconstituted diocese of Galtelli-Nuoro by Pius VI was Msgr. G. A. Serra-Urru.
The cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows.
