NUORO, Diocese of. - City and diocese of Sardinia, suffragan of Cagliari.

The diocese has an area of 3000 sq km with a population of 102,000 inhabitants, all Catholic; it has 34 parishes with 60 diocesan priests and 8 regular priests, 2 male religious communities and 20 female ones, 1 major seminary and 1 minor one (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 292).

The diocese of Galtelli was created in 1138 by Pope Innocent II as a suffragan of Pisa, and was confirmed as such by Alexander III in 1161 and by Innocent III in 1198. Alexander VI, however, suppressed it and united it to Cagliari. On 21 July 1779 Pope Pius VI, with the bull Eam inter caeteras, again erected the diocese of Galtelli as a suffragan of Cagliari, aggregating N. to it and fixing the residence in the latter see. On 27 Jan. 1928 the Sacred Congregation Consistorial changed the name of the diocese to that of N.

The first bishop of the diocese of Galtelli was Msgr. Bernardo, who occupied the episcopal see in 1138; the first of the diocese of Galtelli-N. reconstituted by Pius VI was Msgr. G. A. Serra-Urru.

The Cathedral is consecrated to Our Lady of the Snows.
