RUBEO (Rossi), Giovanni Battista. - Prior general of the Carmelites, b. at Ravenna on 4 Oct. 1508, d. at Rome on 5 Sept. 1578.
At the age of 17 he entered the Order; having obtained a doctorate in theology at Padua in 1547, he was a professor at the Sapienza, vicar general (1562), then prior general (1564). During the canonical visitation in Spain and Portugal, he had occasion to meet St. Teresa of Jesus at Avila (Apr. 1567): he approved her spirit, encouraged her to continue in the reform of the nuns according to the primitive Rule, and indeed authorized with "letters patent" (Barcelona, 16 Aug. 1567) the founding of two houses for "contemplative" Carmelites. But in the general Chapter of Piacenza (1575), which reconfirmed him in his office, severe decisions were taken, for lack of precise information, against the "reformed": the closing of the three convents of Andalusia (Granada, Seville, Peñuela), the return to their convents of origin for the "contemplatives" coming from the ancient observance, and an injunction to St. Teresa to choose a monastery from which she was no longer to leave. Nevertheless R. always preserved esteem and veneration for the holy reformer, who speaks of him with admiration in the book of the Foundations (ch. 2).
Among his various works, printed or manuscript, mention is made of the edition of the Doctrinale antiquitatum fidei Ecclesiae catholicae of T. Netter (Waldensis) edited by R. "cum notis" (3 vols., Venice 1571).
