STOSS, VEIT (STWOSZ WIT). - Sculptor of the German late Gothic, b. probably in Nuremberg in the fifth decade of the 15th century, d. there in 1533.
His first period of artistic activity took place in Poland between 1477 and 1496; from this period comes his masterpiece, the great wooden altar of the church of the Virgin Mary in Kraków, in which a Crucifix by him is also preserved. Also noteworthy from his Polish period are some marble sepulchral monuments, among them first of all that of King Casimir Jagiellon (d. 1492) in Wawel Cathedral in Kraków, that of Card. Zbigniew Oleśnicki (d. 1493) in the cathedral of Gniezno (Gnesen), and that of Bishop Mosinski in the cathedral of Włocławek. Recently in Salzburg (Nonnberg) an altar carved by S. has been discovered.
In 1496 S. moved to Nuremberg, where he had a tormented and tempestuous life; for having forged a bill of exchange, in 1503 he had the marks of infamy branded on his cheeks by the executioner. Amid these troubles the artistic activity of his Nuremberg period appears weaker; the most notable work of it is the Annunciation of the church of St. Lawrence in Nuremberg. In Italy there exists only one work regarded as by S.; it is the St. Roch of the Cappella Gundagni in the Santissima Annunziata in Florence.
