Pietro Tenerani. — Sculptor, born at Torrano near Carrara on 11 Nov. 1789, died in Rome on 14 Dec. 1869.
Introduced to art by his uncle Pietro Marchetti, he later became a pupil of Bartolini in Carrara. In 1813, having won a pension, he went to Rome to study at the Accademia di S. Luca, where Thorwaldsen was teaching; but his temperament inclined him rather to follow the manner of Canova, in his aspiration not to stiffen forms in the imitation of the antique, but to resolve them into a grace even of polished surfaces, sensitive to the delicacies of sfumato.
