Warmundus of Ivrea
VARMONDO, blessed - Sermon by V. to the people against Arduino, Amedeo his brother and Eurardo, a figure not otherwise known, on the occasion, as it seems, of the 2nd excommunication (997-99). The text, preserved in the Liber benedictionum per totius anni circulum, commissioned by V., was published by L. G. Provana, Studi critici sovra la storia d'Italia ai tempi del Re Arduino, Turin 1844, pp. 340-41 - Ivrea, Capitular Archive.
VARMONDO (Veremondo, Warmundus), Blessed. - Bishop of Ivrea from c. 969 to the first decades of the 11th century.
Elected to the see of Ivrea by Emperor Otto I (cf. Allocutio, in Provana [v. bibl.], pp. 340-41), he took part in the Synod of Milan of Sept.-Oct. 969. Loyal to the House of Saxony, he received from it protection and defense on the occasion of his energetic action against the violence and claims of Arduino (v.), whom he excommunicated twice between 997 and 999 (texts in Provana, pp. 334-41). [He obtained] for his church, from Otto III, immunity over the city of Ivrea and three miles around and the cession of the courts of Romano and Fiorano (9 July 1000: Provana, pp. 334-55), and he guaranteed the free existence of the abbey of Fruttuaria, a decree (testamentum) not earlier than 1006, subscribed by various other bishops and sanctioned, on 3 Jan. 1015, by Benedict VIII (cf. P. F. Kehr, Italia Pontificia, VI, II, Berlin 1912, p. 150). Benzo of Alba (v.) recalls the «aetas aurea» for the fine arts under V. (Ad Heinricum IV imp. lib. VII, ed. G. H. Pertz, in MGH. Scriptores, XI, p. 637), who was a poet and patron: he built the Cathedral, gave impetus to the episcopal school and to the scriptorium of which precious manuscripts have survived, among them the well-known Sacramentary, a Psalter, a benedictional, with the text of the excommunication of Arduino, etc., transcribed in beautiful caroline script and richly decorated, bearing numerous distichs composed by V. The year of his death is not known: 1002 has been proposed, but it seems more reliable to place it between 1010 and 1014. His cult was confirmed by Pius IX on 17 Sept. 1857. Feast on 9 Aug.
