VERALLO, GIROLAMO. - Cardinal, born at Cori about 1497, died at Rome on 10 Oct. 1555.

Having entered the ecclesiastical career under the protection of Paolo III, he was referendary of the Segnatura, auditor of the Rota (1539), bishop of Bertinoro (1540–41), of Caserta (1541–44), archbishop of Rossano (1544–51). In Apr. 1535 he was sent to Emperor Carlo V on a special mission concerning the Duchy of Camerino. From 1537 to Feb. 1540 he was nuncio in Venice, where he instituted proceedings against the slanderers of St. Ignazio, whose companions he assisted, and he was always a friend of the Society. Nuncio in Germany to Ferdinando I (1541), he subsequently went to the Court of Carlo V (Feb. 1545–Sept. 1547). He subsequently had to concern himself especially with the opening of the Council of Trent and the war against the Schmalkaldic League. Made cardinal on 8 Apr. 1549, on 8 Sept. 1551 Giulio III sent him to France to Enrico II for the cessation of the war of Mirandola, but he was unable to obtain anything. On his return, he was a member of the Inquisition (1552–53) and of several commissions.
