VIGILIO, bishop of TAPSUS. — This African bishop (prov. Byzacena) took part in the religious dispute which Hunneric had convened in 484 at Carthage. Nothing else is known of his life.
He was the author of a work Contra Eutychetem (PL 62, 95-154). The Catholic doctrine, says V., holds the just middle between Monophysitism and Nestorianism. The last two books (the work consists of 5 books), a defence of the letter of Pope Leo to Flavian and a defence of the Council of Chalcedon, were added by the author himself (cf. I, III, 13). V. wishes to warn his brethren in the East not to adhere to the doctrine of Eutyches. In this work V. refers to earlier writings. These are the book: Contra Ariamos, Sabellianos et Photinianos dialogus, with Athanasius, Arius, Sabellius, Photinus and Judge Probus as interlocutors (PL 62, 179-238; a Contra Ariamos dialogus: PL 62, 155-86, is only a later extract from the preceding book). From the dialogue it is known that V. had previously published two anti-Arian writings (2, 45). One against the

dialectician is dedicated to him in as many as 17 dioceses of Italy: the single diocese of Trent counts 37. Feast on 26 June.
