Apostolic Letter on the establishment of the Faculty of Sacred Theology at the Catholic University of Paris

Apostolic letter of Pope Leo XIII ·

1 TO BE ESTABLISHED IN THE CATHOLIC ATHENAEUM OF PARIS.

2 In the great and manifold abundance of disciplines which is set before a mind desirous of truth, it is hidden from no one that sacred Theology claims for itself so principal a place, that the ancient saying of the wise holds true that it falls to the other sciences and arts to serve it and to minister to it after the manner of handmaidens. For indeed it searches into those heavenly mysteries which God himself willed to be revealed to men, and it explains all things which pertain to eternal beatitude and conduce to its attainment, it unlocks the treasures of divine wisdom, and it is occupied with that order of things which whatever the natural world contains that is loftier and more sublime surpasses by far. Hence it came to pass that the Catholic Church, mindful of the charge and office of teaching men entrusted to her by Christ, has always been most solicitous concerning the cultivation of sacred doctrine, and has always taken the greatest care that it be carefully preserved intact, and faithfully and diligently transmitted and most thoroughly cultivated. Wherefore the Roman Pontiffs have striven with all their might to foster, advance, and adorn with special privileges and honors the studies of this most excellent science in Lyceums, in Academies and in Universities, and the sacred Prelates, following their example, have deemed it their duty to do the same in their respective peoples. But among these it is fitting for Us to praise with the highest commendation the Bishops of France, who, applying themselves so that theological faculties, whenever the changes of affairs and times permitted, might be restored, expended the greatest care lest the faculty of this principal science, which in a certain way embraces the sum of all things which the human mind's gaze can perceive, should be lacking in the Catholic Athenaeum of Paris. These things being known, the Council of Our Venerable Brethren the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church appointed to direct studies, lest this supreme faculty in the principal city of France

5 The Church and especially the Roman Pontiffs have always been most solicitous concerning this science.

6 The zeal of the Bishops of France is praised, who are concerned to establish the theological faculty in the Atheneum of Paris.

7 290 APOSTOLIC LETTER. "in magna et multiplici" Concerning the safeguard and ornament of the Apostolic authority, which was desired, We had long since determined to confirm it, had not the circumstances of affairs counseled that the matter be cautiously deferred. Now that the difficulties which formerly appeared to impede the granting of such a privilege have been removed, the same Venerable Brethren of Ours, the Council, having duly weighed and examined the matter, judged that the theological faculty of Paris ought to be fortified and adorned with the desired honor of canonical erection, and that its more recent constitutions should be approved. This judgment of Our Venerable Brethren We, to whom the cultivation and study of sacred disciplines is especially dear, do ratify and confirm with all the readiness in the Lord that We can muster, and with the more willing mind because We are confident that the most abundant fruits will result therefrom. For there returns to Us a most pleasant recollection of that fortunate time when from the bosom of the theological faculty of Paris there proceeded Peter Lombard, William of Paris, Albert the Great, Bonaventure, Aegidius, and very many others, who illuminated the Christian world with the light of choice wisdom, whom it is necessary to pass over in number, save that We remember one—Thomas Aquinas, whom the whole Church admires and reveres as the most brilliant sun. May such renowned and distinguished leaders be followed by new doctors, and especially if they embrace and carefully expound and stoutly defend the doctrine of the Angelic Master, We hope that that pristine dignity and singular glory will be restored to great advancement of studies and of Christianity itself. Wherefore by Our Apostolic authority, by the force of these letters We decree and ordain that the theological faculty of Paris shall have true and properly so-called canonical erection, and to it We canonically institute by Our Apostolic authority all rights and prerogatives granted by the Holy See to similar institutions approved by it, to be held and enjoyed in perpetuity for all future times, provided nevertheless that all and singular things contained in the constitutions or statutes of the same Venerable Brethren of Ours attached hereto shall be observed exactly. This We will and command, notwithstanding any individual and specific mention and derogation worthy of contrary provision whatsoever.

8 Given at Rome at St. Peter's under the Fisherman's Ring on 10 December 1889, in the twelfth year of Our Pontificate.
