Letter summoning King Philip IV of France to the Council of Vienne

Letter of Pope Clement V ·

a council to be convened after two years: — 14. And having admonished all the prelates to come to Vienna within this time: — 15. Bringing with them the examination of this matter: — 16. And let no one be absent under the pretext of any vain excuse: — 17. He urges Philip himself also to go there.

1 Clement, Pope the Fifth, to his dearest son in Christ Philip, illustrious King of the French. The Church triumphant reigning in heaven, whose shepherd is the Eternal Father, to whom the hosts of saints minister and the choirs of angels sing the glory of praise, has established on earth the Church militant for its likeness and representation, joined by ineffable commerce to the only-begotten Son of the living God, our Lord Jesus Christ, in which the same only-begotten Son of God, proceeding from the Father, through the illumination of the Paraclete, proceeding likewise from both, established the foundation of faith.

2 § 1. Indeed the Roman Church, mother of the faithful, is the head and teacher of all other churches, by the disposition of the divine will: from which, as from a primitive fountain, the streams of the same faith are derived to each of the other churches, and to whose governance Christ's clemency willed to appoint the Roman Pontiff as his minister in his stead, so that all the reborn by the font of Baptism might hold and preserve the instruction and doctrine of the same delivered by the eloquence of evangelical truth, so that those who have rightly completed the course of life under this doctrine may be saved; but those who have deviated from it shall be condemned.

3 2. That same Roman mother Church, according to the exigency of her possibility, extending the gaze of diligent consideration to all the provinces of the world, in which the worship of the divine Name flourishes and the observance of the Catholic faith shines forth, and subjecting to the examination of her consideration from of old the straits of long calamity of that special heritage of the Lord, namely the Holy Land miserably trampled by the infidels, in which the same Son of the Eternal Father, clothed in the garment of our flesh, wrought the salvation of mankind with ineffable piety, and which He Himself willed to honor with His bodily presence and to consecrate by the sprinkling of His own Blood, has striven with great solicitude in times past, as much as she was able, to aid that land with remedies, so that she might snatch it from the impious themselves.

4 § 3. And because among others, whom the defense of the Christian religion includes, it befell the Knights Templar, namely the prelates and brothers of the house of the Militia of the Temple of Jerusalem, as is known to the whole world, as special champions of the same faith and principal defenders of the aforesaid Land, they appeared to be conducting the business of that Land principally, the aforesaid Church, pursuing them and their order with the fullness of special favor, armed them against the enemies of Christ with the sign of the cross, exalted them with many honors, enriched them with resources, and fortified them with diverse liberties and privileges.

5 § 4. For indeed, since they were believed to be serving faithfully in the service of the Lord under a regular habit and under the Pontiff, they seemed to themselves as it were the hands of all the faithful in performing all good things, and they felt themselves aided in many ways and by many means on account of this with manifold bestowal of honors; but (alas for sorrow) a new and calamitous report, proceeding from the enormity of the malice of those brothers themselves, has filled, nay rather, has disturbed our hearing. For this report, a messenger of lamentation and groaning, strikes horror in those who hear it, disturbs minds, troubles thoughts, and furnishes to all cultivators of the Christian faith a chalice of new and ineffable bitterness, and while we draw forth the series of the deed by present necessity, our spirit is weakened by anguish; and our health being wearied by the brothers, each member wastes away from excessive sorrow.

6 § 5. Indeed, when we heard some time ago of our promotion to the apex of the supreme pontificate, even before we came to Lyons, where we received the insignia of our coronation, and afterwards both there and elsewhere, the secret insinuation of certain persons intimated to us that the master, preceptors, and other brothers of the said Militia of the Temple, and also the Order itself, which had been appointed in the lands beyond the sea for the defence of the patrimony of our Lord Jesus Christ himself, had fallen into the abominable crime of apostasy against that same Lord, the detestable vice of idolatry, the execrable deed of sodomy, and various heresies. But because it did not seem probable, nor credible, that men so religious, who were believed to have frequently shed their blood for the name of Christ, and to have often exposed their persons to the perils of death, and who frequently displayed many and great signs of devotion both in divine offices and in fastings and other observances, should be so forgetful of their own salvation as to perpetrate such things, we were unwilling to incline our ear to such insinuation and accusation, being instructed by the examples of that same Lord in the doctrines of canonical Scripture: but afterwards you, to whom those same crimes had been reported, not moved by the desire of avarice, since you intended to claim or appropriate nothing for yourself from the goods of the Templars, but rather left them in our kingdom to be administered, governed, preserved and guarded by those appointed by us for this purpose, liberally and devoutly, withdrawing your hand entirely therefrom, but inflamed by zeal for the orthodox faith, following closely the footsteps of your forebears, having informed yourself as lawfully as you could concerning the aforesaid matters, sent to us many and great informations concerning them through your messengers and letters, to instruct and inform us thereupon.

7 § 6. Moreover, as infamy against the Templars themselves grew stronger, and because also a certain knight of the same Order of great nobility, and who held no slight position in the said Order, deposited secretly before us under oath that in the reception of brothers of the aforesaid Order this custom, or rather corruption, is observed, that at the suggestion of the recipient, or of one appointed by him, he who is received denies Jesus Christ, and spits upon a cross shown to him in contempt of the Crucified, and certain other things are done by the recipient and the received which are not lawful, nor befitting human honesty, as he then confessed before us, we could not, being urged by the duty of our office to avoid this, refrain from lending our ear to such great clamours. But when at length, public report bearing it and clamorous insinuation, both yours and that of the dukes, counts and barons, and other nobles, the clergy also and people of your said kingdom, coming to our presence both in person and through proctors and syndics (which we report with sorrow), reached our hearing that the master, preceptors and other brothers of the said Order and the Order itself were entangled in the aforesaid and many other crimes; and when the aforesaid matters appeared to be proved in some way by many confessions, attestations and depositions of the aforesaid master and many preceptors and brothers of the Order aforesaid made, held and received before many prelates and the inquisitor of heretical depravity in the kingdom of France, and reduced into public writing, and shown to us and our brothers, and nevertheless the aforesaid report and clamours had so greatly prevailed and also increased, both against the Order itself and against the individual persons thereof, that they could not be passed over without grave scandal, nor tolerated without eminent danger: we, adhering to the footsteps of Him whose vicar, though unworthy, we bear on earth, deemed it right to proceed to inquire into the aforesaid matters, with due deliberation, and having constituted many of the preceptors, priests, knights and other brothers of the said Order of no small repute in our presence, and having required an oath from them that they would tell us the pure and full truth concerning the aforesaid matters, we interrogated and examined them upon the aforesaid matters up to the number of seventy-two, with many of our brothers assisting us diligently, and their confessions, reduced into authentic writing by public hands, we caused to be read in our presence and that of the said our brothers, and afterwards, after the interposition of some days, in consistory before themselves, and those confessions were expounded to each of them in their vernacular. These, persevering in them, expressly and willingly approved them, as they had been recited.

§ 7.

8 After we, intending to inquire into the aforesaid matters with the master and principal preceptors of the said order by ourselves, mandated that the same master and the greater preceptors of France, the Overseas Land, Normandy, Aquitaine and Poitou be presented to us, then being at Poitiers. But because some of them were so infirm at that time that they could not ride, nor be brought to our presence in any way, we, wishing to know the truth from them concerning all the aforesaid matters, and whether those things were true which were said to have been contained in their confessions and depositions, which they made before the inquisitor of heretical depravity in your aforesaid kingdom, in the presence of certain public notaries and many other good men, exhibited and shown to us and our brethren through the same inquisitor under public hands, we committed and mandated to our beloved sons Berengarius, titular priest of Sts. Nereus and Achilleus, Stephen, titular priest of St. Cyriacus in the Baths, and Landulph, deacon of St. Angelo, cardinals, in whose prudence, experience and fidelity we hold undoubted confidence, that they themselves should inquire with the aforesaid master and preceptors, both against them and other individual persons of the said order generally, and against the order itself concerning the aforesaid matters with diligence for the truth, and whatever they should find concerning these things, they should report to us, and should take care to bring and present their confessions and depositions reduced to writing by public hand to our apostolic authority, and to the same master and preceptors they should bestow the benefit of absolution from the sentence of excommunication, which they had incurred for the aforesaid matters, if they were true, should they humbly and devoutly seek absolution, as they ought, according to the form of the Church.

9 § 8. Which cardinals, coming personally to the same master and preceptors at a suitable time, exposed to them the reason for their coming, and because both the persons and the property of the same and other Templars existing in your said kingdom were in our hands, that they might freely without fear of anyone speak the full and pure truth concerning all the aforesaid matters to the same cardinals, they enjoined upon them by apostolic authority. Which master and preceptors of France, the Overseas Land, Normandy, Aquitaine and Poitou, before the same three cardinals, in the presence of four public notaries and many other good men, having sworn upon the holy Gospels of God, corporally taken by them, that they would speak the pure and full truth concerning all the aforesaid matters, before the same individually, freely and willingly, without any coercion and fear, deposed and confessed, among other things, the denial of Christ and spitting upon the cross, when they were received into the order of the Temple, and some of them confessed that they had received many brothers under the same form, namely with denial of Christ and spitting upon the cross. Some of them also confessed certain other horrible and unseemly things, which, to spare their modesty for the present, we pass over in silence. They said moreover, and confessed to be true, those things which were contained in their confessions and depositions, which they had made some time before the inquisitor of heretical depravity. Which confessions and depositions of the said master and preceptors were reduced to public writing by four public notaries, in the presence of the same master and preceptors and certain other good men, and then after an interval of some days, were read before the same cardinals aforesaid by their mandate and in their presence, and were expounded in the vernacular to each of them. Which, persisting in them, expressly and willingly, as they had been recited, approved them, and after these confessions and depositions, they sought absolution from the same cardinals from the excommunication which they had incurred for the aforesaid matters, on bended knees and with hands clasped, humbly and devoutly, and with no small effusion of tears.

10 § 9. The same cardinals, because the Church does not close her bosom to those returning and seeking pardon, having the heresy expressly abjured by the same master and preceptors, bestowed upon them the benefit of absolution according to the form of the Church by our authority.

11 § 10. And then returning to our presence, they presented to us the confessions and depositions of the aforesaid master and preceptors reduced to public writing by public hands, as has been said, and reported what they had done with the said master and preceptors, from which confessions and depositions and report we found that the aforesaid master and brethren had gravely offended in the aforesaid matters and concerning the aforesaid matters, although some of them in many respects and others in fewer respects.

12 § 11. Considering, however, that such horrible deeds could not and ought not to pass uncorrected, to the injury of almighty God and of all Catholics, we have decreed, by the counsel of our brethren, through the ordinaries of places and through other faithful and wise men appointed by us for this purpose, that inquiry be made against individual persons of the said order, and also against the said order itself through certain appointed persons whom we have deemed fit to depute for this purpose, concerning the aforesaid crimes and excesses.

13 § 12. Those matters which we are more moved to grieve over than to relate cause our heart to suffer most grievously: our soul is tormented with excessive sorrow, and since such great cause for lamentation is upon us, we cannot refrain from weeping. What Catholic hearing these things would not grieve exceedingly and break forth into mourning? What faithful person, understanding such an unhappy event, would not emit bitter sighs and burst forth with words of lamentation and sorrow, when all Christendom shares in such grief, and this case strikes all the faithful? From these things also, when they are presented to the eyes of our mind in the ministry of due consideration, fire blazes forth in our meditations, and to remedy such great perils, our affection sighs, zeal is kindled, and our spirit is troubled.

14 § 13. Since we know that we cannot sufficiently and conveniently accomplish this by ourselves, we lift up our eyes to the mountain, the mountain of God, the fertile mountain, the fat mountain, from which we humbly seek and devoutly hope that fitting aid will come to us; and because it is important that a salutary remedy be applied in these matters for the good of all, we, together with the same brethren of ours and other prudent men, after exact and frequent deliberation held as the urgency of such necessity required, by the counsel of the same brethren, have decreed that a general council be convoked, following the worthy imitation and praiseworthy custom of the holy Fathers, an example of long-standing observance, from the approaching first of October for two years immediately following, so that in it, both concerning the said order and individual persons and the goods thereof, and other matters which pertain to the state of the Catholic faith, and concerning the recovery and aid of the Holy Land, and the repair, ordering and stability of ecclesiastical persons and their liberties, there may be found, God willing, a provision by common counsel, and may be strengthened by the approval of the same council; for the salutary execution of which the power of the Most High, errors eliminated, faith strengthened, those who have erred brought back to the path of truth, the unity of the same faith restored, vices rooted out and virtues planted, excesses corrected, morals reformed, oppressions repressed, liberty established with solid stability, lost things recovered, and the state of the same Land restored to prosperity, may restore what has been seized, repair what has been laid waste, and preserve it; and may the same One, who knows, open the way to us, and may He who is able grant us the faculty, so that thus in the aforesaid matters according to the earnest desire of our heart we may serve Him salutarily, so that the same true universal Spouse of the Church may always have His beloved Church purged of stains, strengthened with virtue, and adorned with adornments, one and beautiful, to the praise and glory of His name, to the profit of souls, the strengthening of faith, the peace and exaltation of the Christian people. Since, however, the prosecution of so great a purpose requires time, so that what has been undertaken may more easily and readily, with the Lord as author, attain its due effect, we have deemed it fitting to assign the aforesaid time for this purpose.

15 § 13. Since we know that we ourselves are not sufficient for this and that the appointed time cannot conveniently serve, we lift up our eyes to the mountain for a biennial period, the mountain whence aid is opportune for us to come forth, which we humbly beseech and devoutly hope for: and because it is salutary that a remedy be applied in these matters for the common good of all, we, together with these same brothers of ours and other prudent men, after exact and frequent deliberation held as the urgency of so great a necessity required, by the counsel of those same brothers, have decreed that a universal council, following the praiseworthy custom of the holy Fathers worthy of imitation and the example of long-standing observance, shall be convoked from the approaching first of October for the two immediately following years, so that in it, both concerning the said order and individual persons and the goods of the same, and other matters which pertain to the state of the Catholic faith, and concerning the recovery and aid of the Holy Land, and the repair, ordering and stability of ecclesiastical persons and their liberties, there may be found, God favouring, by common counsel a provision, and the same may be strengthened by the approval of the council; for the salutary execution of which the power of the Most High, errors eliminated, faith strengthened, those erring brought back to the path of truth, the unity of the same faith restored, vices rooted out and virtues planted, excesses corrected, morals reformed, oppressions repressed, liberty established with solid stability, lost things recovered, and the state of the same Land restored to prosperity, may restore what has been seized, repair what has been laid waste and preserve it, and may open the way to us—He Himself who knows—and grant the faculty—He Himself who is able—so that thus in the aforesaid matters according to the earnest desire of our heart we may serve Him salutarily, that the same true universal Spouse of the Church may always have His beloved Church purged of stains, strengthened with virtue, and adorned with jewels, one and beautiful to the praise and glory of His name, to the profit of souls, the strengthening of faith, the peace and exaltation of the Christian people. Since, however, the prosecution of so great an undertaking requires time, so that what has been undertaken may more maturely and easily, with the Lord as author, attain its due effect, we have deemed the aforesaid time to be appointed for this purpose.

16 § 14. Wherefore to our venerable brothers the archbishops, bishops and beloved sons elected abbots, priors, deans, preposits, archdeacons, presbyters, and other prelates of the Churches, exempt and non-exempt, and their chapters and convents, by other letters of ours commanding we mandate, that the same archbishops, as well as the other bishops constituted through the provinces of those same archbishops named in the same letters, the rest of their bishops remaining in the said provinces for those things which the pontifical office requires, both in their own and in those of the said provinces, who shall have come to such universal council, in cities and dioceses to be exercised, all negligence set aside, all things disposed and prepared as the quality of such and so great a matter requires, thus in the meantime let them gird themselves for the journey, which in such decree at the term which we assign to them and to others peremptorily, in the city of Vienne, the same archbishops and bishops thus named shall personally, but the other remaining bishops, elected, abbots, priors, deans, preposits, archdeacons, presbyters and prelates, chapters and convents through the same archbishops and bishops who shall come to the aforesaid council, to whom for all things which in the same council shall be established, and ordained, and shall be opportune, grant full power, of which sufficiently it may be evident through public documents, present themselves to our sight. But if perchance to those archbishops and bishops coming they shall be unwilling to grant such power, in that case they are bound to come, or to send other suitable procurators with like power to the same council.

17 § 15. Notwithstanding any privileges or indulgences whatsoever granted by the aforesaid See to any persons, order, dignity or college under whatsoever form or expression of words, by which the effect of this our mandate could be hindered in any way, or to the same in anything be derogated. We have moreover mandated, that the same archbishops and prelates through themselves or through other prudent men, fearing God, and having before their eyes all things which the file of correction and reformation demands, inquiring subtly, and writing faithfully, the same to the knowledge of the council itself they shall bring. And we nonetheless by various modes and ways earnest study and efficacious labour propose to give, that all such things brought into the examination of such council, correction and suitable direction may receive.

18 § 16. This also in the same our letters being added, that no one desiring to see the excuse of disobedience and the severity of canonical punishment,

19 let him arm himself with the veil of fallacious excuses, or from impediments of journeys, which, the Lord in His omnipotence turning the crooked into straight and the rough into plain ways, shall cease, let him fabricate the monuments of frivolous allegation, that he may withdraw himself from so holy a prosecution of the work: but let all come willingly to that which both accords with divine will and regards the salvation of souls, and the utility of individuals.

20 § 17. Moreover, because it is hindered in many ways, that so celebrated a council be adorned also by the presence of you and of other Catholic princes, that it may be supported by salutary counsel and aid, we beseech and earnestly exhort your royal serenity in remission of your sins, that at the place and term prescribed in the same council, having meanwhile sought a suitable opportunity for this, you strive to be present personally, with provident meditation prudently attending, that in this not only the labour, which you assume for the promotion of so holy and useful a matter, shall redound to your merit, but also of others, who to coming to the same council shall be more efficaciously induced by your example, and moreover you shall be able to open your wishes to us more familiarly, which in all benevolence we shall willingly admit to the grace of hearing, as much as with God and the honour of the Church we shall be able.

I quali perseverando in esse, le approvarono espressamente e spontaneamente, così come erano state recitate.

§ 7.
