In Apostolicae Sedis specula
5 Questo dunque il Pontefice, per ricondurre alla via della salvezza e alla luce, nella Città erige un collegio dei Greci, con assegnazione di rendite;
A nessun uomo dunque.

1 for the support and instruction of scholars of the Greek nation, with the assignment of annual revenues and the granting of indults.
Gregory, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.
2 Placed, by the disposition of the Lord, in the watchtower of the apostolic See, though with unequal merits, to procure the salvation of all peoples and nations professing the faith of Christ, we have found ourselves so weak that, imparting the study of our charity and vigilance no less to those far distant than to those near at hand, we execute what we judge to be expedient according to our strength.
3 § 1. Therefore, when we survey the parts of the Christian world with the eyes of our mind, amid the various afflictions of these times, a great compassion for the Greek nation comes upon our spirit, which long ago flourished in the excellence of letters and sciences and in the sublimity of empire, but afterwards, subjected to the tyranny of the Turks, was reduced to the utmost calamity, and, what is most wretched, to the captivity of souls followed the servitude of bodies, because the people of Greece have fallen into such ignorance of all sciences that scarcely anyone can be found among them who is able to profess them and teach others; and indeed all who hold the rank of bishops, priests, or other ecclesiastical order among them, wrapped in the foulest darkness of ignorance, rude in sacred theology, ignorant of Catholic dogmas, and departing from the path of orthodox religion and obedience to the Holy Roman Church, the mother and teacher of all, have fallen into various errors and schisms, and have drawn the laity with them into the same pit of error.
4 § 2. Wherefore, desiring to recall this ancient and celebrated nation from such darkness of ignorance and errors to the light of truth and the way of salvation, we have judged that no remedy more apt for this purpose could be applied by us than if a college be erected in this our beloved City, in which Greek boys and youths, sought out from Greece itself and from other provinces and places where they dwell, may be nourished, and may be diligently instructed in Greek letters, liberal disciplines and sciences, especially sacred theology, and moreover in ecclesiastical rites by men of proven faith and learning, so that, after they have been firmly established in the solidity of the Catholic faith, the Greeks, who once were sublime in empire and knowledge, but are now in the greatest calamity and ignorance, and have deviated from the Catholic faith, may be recalled.
5 This Pontiff, therefore, to lead the Tolensian to the way of salvation and light, erects a college of Greeks in the City, with the assignment of revenues;
6 have been given, and shall have made progress in such studies, returning to their homeland and places, some, who shall have preferred to profess the monastic life, may strive to instruct the other monks and religious catholically, and to recall them to monastic discipline and regular observance, from which they appear to have wholly declined, according to the institutions of the holy Fathers; others, however, who shall be enrolled in the clergy, may be able to benefit and preside over the peoples of their nation, to exercise the care of souls, to preach the word of God sincerely, to remove peoples from errors and schism, and to lead them back to the saving truth of the orthodox faith; the remaining ones, truly, who shall have remained in the lay life, may publicly teach to the sons of other Greeks in cities the rudiments and truth of the same faith and letters and liberal arts, and likewise may be able to maintain themselves in orthodox religion; and thus, God's grace favouring, it may be hoped that sound and integral preaching and doctrine of the faith may someday be restored in Greece itself and in all the parts moreover of the Orient, and the lights of the ancient Fathers of the same people may shine forth. Therefore, to the glory of almighty God, to the exaltation of the holy Catholic faith, to the salvation of those same Greek souls, and to their perpetual union with the Roman Church, by our own motion and certain knowledge and from the fullness of apostolic power, by the tenor of these presents, we erect and establish one college of Greek boys and youths in this same City of ours, in a place to be appointed for this purpose, by apostolic authority, and we assign to it a dowry in the name of one hundred gold scudi, from our own and the Apostolic Camera's funds, until otherwise suitably provided, to be paid in each month. Furthermore, since the cathedral church of Chios of the island of Crete has in a certain manner become vacant and is vacant at present, we, considering that the church itself is wholly lacking in clergy and people of the Latin rite, except for a few certain canons, who nevertheless from time immemorial, whether on account of the meagerness of their prebends or for other reasons, have never resided there, but have been accustomed to dwell in nearby Cydonia, have judged it fitting to apply some assistance to the aforesaid college for the sustenance of scholars from the fruits of this church, until, God granting, such a bishop might be constituted, who could also minister the sacraments and those things of the pontifical order to the Greek clergy and people. Wherefore all the fruits, revenues and proceeds of the said church of Chios, all rights, perquisites and emoluments, except for two hundred scudi, to be paid annually to the administrator or vicar, who shall be appointed by us to the same church, and an annual pension of similar gold scudi, which we have decreed to be assigned to our venerable brother the bishop of Milos, so that he might be more comfortably sustained, to the college of Greeks erected by us, for the space of fifteen years, by the same apostolic authority, we apply, attribute and assign, so that by the procurators of the same college, by their own authority, all these things may be exacted, received and levied, and the lands, houses and whatever goods may be leased, and other things opportune and necessary for this may be done.
7 § 3. We will, moreover, that the same college, its rectors, oeconomi, masters, ordinary teachers and instructors and scholars existing in it for the time being, and their servants, officials and ministers, and the goods of the college, movable and immovable, of whatever quality and quantity, existing in the said City and outside and elsewhere in all places, be exempt from all jurisdiction, correction, visitation, dominion, superiority and power of the senator existing for the time being, conservators and reformers of the said City, as well as of the rector of the General Studio, the vicar of the City and the ordinaries of places and any other judges and officials constituted in the same City or elsewhere. And the college itself, also with its own things and goods, and those contracting in the name of the same and aforesaid, we exempt and entirely free from the payment and exaction of all and any toll, tax, bulletta, tithes and any other, whether ordinary or extraordinary, burden, imposed or to be imposed from whatever cause, and we take it under the protection of blessed Peter and the Apostolic See and our own, and subject it immediately to us and the said See, and declare it free, immune and exempt.
8 § 4. And to the same college and school and to its rectors and oeconomi, and to all and singular privileges, exemptions, faculties and indults, by which the General Studio of the nurturing City and its rector and doctors, also reading in it in the same act, in any manner use, enjoy and possess, and are able to use, enjoy and possess in any way in the future, we grant and indulge, to the likeness of theirs in the same manner to use, enjoy and possess, in all things and through all things, and we communicate those to them.
9 § 5. Likewise to the senator, conservators, Officials observing the reform, rector and other judges, officials and aforesaid persons, and to the camerarius of the Holy Roman Church existing for the time being, and to the presidents and clerks of the Apostolic Camera, and to any commissioners appointed for the time being for the exaction of tithes and other aforesaid burdens, we strictly forbid that under the pretext of any letters whatsoever granted to them under whatsoever tenor and forms, they molest or permit to be molested in any way the college, scholars, rectors, stewards, officials and aforesaid ministers or any of them in the aforesaid matters.
10 § 6. And furthermore to the regents and superiors of the aforesaid college;
