Pastoralis officii

BRIEF OF POPE PAUL III TO PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THE MATTER. PAUL, POPE III
1 The care of pastoral office committed to Us over the whole flock of Christ, and the love of divine glory and praise, move Us to embrace those things which aid the salvation of souls and their spiritual progress; and to admit to the grace of hearing the petitions of those who ask from Us something which may avail to foster and nourish piety in the faithful of Christ. Since therefore, as our beloved son, the noble man Francis of Borgia, Duke of Gandia, recently caused to be set forth to Us, our beloved son Ignatius of Loyola, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, erected by Us in our nurturing City and confirmed by Us with apostolic authority, has composed certain documents or Spiritual Exercises, drawn forth from Holy Scripture and from the experiences of spiritual life, and has arranged them in an order most fitting to move piously the minds of the faithful; and since these are most useful and salutary to the faithful of Christ for spiritual consolation and progress, not only has the aforesaid Francis, Duke, learned this from report brought from many places, but also has verified it by manifest experience, both at Barcelona, and at Valencia, and at Gandia. Wherefore the same Francis, Duke, humbly caused supplication to be made to Us, that We should cause the aforesaid documents and Spiritual Exercises to be examined, so that their fruit might be more widely known, and more of the faithful of Christ might be invited with greater devotion to use them; and that, if We should find them worthy of approbation and praise, We should approve and praise them, and otherwise provide opportunely in the premises with apostolic benignity. We therefore, who have caused these documents and Exercises to be examined, and which by the testimony and report of our beloved son John, of the title of St. Clement, Presbyter Cardinal, Bishop of Burgos and Inquisitor of heretical depravity, and of our venerable brother Philip, Bishop of Saluzzo and Vicar General of our said City in spiritual matters, and also of our beloved son Aegidius Foscararii, Master of our sacred Palace, made to Us concerning these, we have found to be full of piety and sanctity, and most useful and salutary for the edification and spiritual progress of the faithful and shall be; having also due regard for the abundant fruits which Ignatius and the aforesaid Society instituted by him do not cease to produce in the Church of God throughout all nations, and for the greatest aid which the aforesaid Exercises have brought to this, not without reason; inclined by these supplications, We approve, commend, and fortify with the protection of the present writing, by the aforesaid authority, by the tenor of these presents, from our certain knowledge, the aforesaid documents and Exercises, and all and singular things contained in them; exhorting most greatly in the Lord all and singular of both sexes, faithful of Christ, constituted anywhere, that they may wish to use such pious documents and Exercises, and to be instructed in them devoutly. And moreover granting that such documents and Spiritual Exercises may be freely and lawfully printed by any bookseller, chosen by the aforesaid Ignatius. Yet so that after the first edition, without the consent of the same Ignatius or his successors, they may not be printed at all, either by this or by another, under the penalty of excommunication and 500 ducats, to be applied to pious works. And commanding nevertheless all and singular the Ordinaries of places, and persons constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, and the canons of cathedral and metropolitan churches, and the Vicars General in spiritual matters of the same Ordinaries, and officials constituted anywhere, that they themselves, or two, or one of them, through themselves or through another or others, assisting any of the aforesaid Society, or others to whom it may concern, in the aforesaid Spiritual Exercises with the protection of effective defense, shall cause them to enjoy and rejoice peacefully in the said concession and approbation: not permitting them to be molested in any way by anyone whatsoever against the tenor of these presents; restraining any contradictors and rebels by ecclesiastical censures and penalties and other appropriate remedies of law, appeal being set aside; invoking also to this, if it shall be necessary, the aid of the secular arm. Notwithstanding the constitutions of our Predecessor of happy memory, Pope Boniface VIII, of one, and of the General Council of two diets, provided that no one be drawn beyond three by authority of these presents; any other Constitutions and apostolic Ordinances whatsoever, and any other things whatsoever to the contrary: or if to any commonly or severally from the same See it has been granted that they cannot be interdicted, suspended, or excommunicated by apostolic letters not making full and express and word for word mention of such indult. We will moreover that transcripts of the present letters, subscribed by the hand of a public Notary, and furnished with the seal of some Prelate or person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, shall have full faith everywhere, and shall be stood by, as much in judgment as outside, as if the original letters were exhibited and shown. Given at Rome, at St. Mark's, under the Fisherman's Ring, on the last day of July, in the year one thousand five hundred and forty-eight, in the fourteenth year of Our Pontificate.
