1 major debet habere doctorem in theologia.
Honorius episcopus, servus servorum Dei,

Testo inglese

1 must have a master in theology.
Honorius, bishop, servant of the servants of God,
to our venerable brethren the archbishops and bishops and to our beloved sons the other prelates of the churches and chapters established throughout Sweden
greeting and apostolic blessing.

2 From the seat of the Lord, although unworthy in our position, while we contemplate with careful and prolonged attention the state of the universal Church, we grieve greatly and testify 1 that, although the fields are white for a great harvest, and the workers are very few, most of the watchmen who are held to guard the Lord's vineyard sleep their sleep, nor do they gather the excessively growing tares into bundles for burning, although the enemy continually oversows them; and while milk and the little one fail in the streets, there is scarcely anyone who breaks bread for the little ones, or gives water of saving wisdom to the thirsty, because the knowledge of the Lord is small in the land. For many, like mockers, having received no small portion of the substance of Jesus Christ, have procured for themselves from it empty and hollow husks which do not satisfy, and they draw water with the bucket of the Samaritan woman from a well or stream of the waters of the unfaithful, which do not relieve but rather irritate the thirst of the dropsical. Such men, forsaking a closed garden, to which no stranger has access, where there is a fountain and a well of living waters, and digging for themselves cisterns which cannot hold water, as if finding no pastures, despising the manna, while they long for the garlic and melons of Egypt, run to lucrative sciences 4, fixing their eyes to look down upon the earth. Therefore, so that through valid interpretations, as it were through a father's blows, wandering sons may be recalled to their mother's breast, and like young eagles may be able to fly more swiftly, and may wish and be able to run unharmed and willingly in the fragrance of the grace of Jesus Christ, to draw living waters with joy from the fountains of the Saviour, we desire to remove certain obstacles standing in the way of this journey and to attach certain necessary things to those things which have been set forth by our predecessors from of old for the propagation of the offspring of the true vine 6. Since therefore from each province beautiful maidens and virgins for King Ahasuerus, who is called blessedness, ought to be sought through handmaidens and brought to the citadel and walls of the city, and through the hand of Haggai receive the feminine adornment, namely the necessary supports, we will and command that the statute issued in the general Council concerning masters of theology to be appointed throughout each metropolis be inviolably observed, and we further decree, by the counsel of our brothers, and by strict command ordering that, because on this matter some might perhaps excuse themselves on account of the rarity of masters, some teachable persons be sent by the prelates of churches and chapters to the study of theological profession, who, when they have been taught, may shine in God's Church like the brightness of the firmament, from whom afterwards a supply of doctors may be had who, like stars remaining for perpetual eternities, may be able to instruct many unto justice; and if their own ecclesiastical revenues do not suffice, let the aforesaid supply them with necessities; and those teaching in the theological faculty, while they have taught in the schools, and students in the same, shall receive in full for five years from the licence of the Apostolic See the revenues of prebends and their benefices, notwithstanding any contrary custom or statute, since those working in the Lord's vineyard ought not to be defrauded of a penny. We will that these things be observed firmly and without wavering, firmly determining that we shall strike transgressors with due penalty 7. Indeed, although the grace of other sciences is deceitful and beauty also vain, since the wheat of the elect and wine producing virgins according to the Prophet is good above all things and is beautiful, yet because certain regulars, despising the cloister's silence and the law of the Lord converting souls, and wisdom giving to the little ones which they ought to have loved above gold and topaz, go after the footsteps of flocks and unlawfully turn themselves to embrace handmaidens who desire the applause of the people; against such presumptuous ones going out to hear the laws or physics, our predecessor of happy memory A. once decreed in the Council of Tours, that unless within the space of two months they return to the cloister, they shall be avoided by all as excommunicated, and in no case, if they wish to offer patronage, shall they be heard. But those returning in the choir, chapter, table, and other places shall be last of the brothers, and unless perhaps by the mercy of the Apostolic See they lose all hope of promotion. But because some of such persons, on account of certain diverse opinions, were assuming certain excuses, we, willing that such henceforth incur the sentence of excommunication by the very fact itself, by strict command ordering that both by their diocesans and chapters, and also by other bishops in whose dioceses such persons study in this manner, the obstacle of appeal being removed, they be publicly announced as excommunicated and subject to the aforesaid penalties. Because we desire to enlarge the study of theology, so that, having enlarged the place of its tent, it may make its cords longer, and the Catholic faith be girded about with an impregnable wall of warriors, to whom it may be able to resist those ascending from the opposite side, and we will that this be extended to archdeacons, deans, provosts, parish priests, cantors, and other clerics having personatus, as well as presbyters, unless they desist from these things within the prescribed space, and, appeal being set aside, be inviolably observed. For since there are many innkeepers mixing water with wine who strive not only to involve falsehoods with truths, but also to turn day into night, we greatly desire to plant luminaries in the firmament of heaven dividing day from night, striving most earnestly to have an abundance of good hunters for catching the little foxes which destroy the vineyards, who may be powerful against the perverters of the faith, in deed and word; these clothed with double garments so that they may deserve to possess double things, when they shall see on the last day to judge with the senators of the earth granted to them, moreover, since silver has its veins' sources elsewhere than where iron is taken, and gold has a place where it is smelted, Paris has long been appointed, where the tower of David with its bulwarks is accustomed to be established, from which not only a thousand shields depend, but almost all the armour of the strong, while from there ceaselessly strong men from the strongest proceed holding swords and most learned in wars, which they seek throughout the world on all sides for Solomon's bed. Some, envying its riches, seem to say to the father what are you begetting, and to the mother what are you bringing forth, while they desire to plant a grove beside the altar and to substitute a handmaid as heir to her mistress, although the son of the handmaid ought not to be heir with the son of the free woman. For certain wicked men run there with the traditions of secular princes as if they wished to make rare there the blacksmith sharpening a sword or lance, a ploughshare and a hoe; and since in many places they have more professors of their study, they willingly thrust their wares before the eyes of sons so that, enticed by their ornaments and sweetness provoked, they may be drawn away from the beauty of the mother and the savory breasts, not attending to the fact that the bed is narrow there, and the place is almost strait for the sons of the prophets. Indeed, although holy Church does not reject the service of secular laws, which imitate the footsteps of sound equity and justice: Yet because in France and certain provinces, laymen do not use the laws of the Roman emperors and ecclesiastical cases occur rarely which cannot be expedited by canonical statutes, so that fuller attention may be given to sacred Scripture and the disciples of Elisha may more freely dwell by the fullest streams, like doves, since they have not found ladders at the gates by which they might spread their feet, we firmly forbid and more strictly prohibit that anyone presume to teach or hear civil law at Paris or in cities or other nearby places; and whoever acts contrary to this, not only shall be excluded from the patronage of cases in the meantime, but shall also be bound by the bishop of the place, appeal being set aside, with the bond of excommunication. You, however, brothers and sons, so diligently keep the aforesaid prescriptions and cause them to be more studiously observed by others, that you may be rightly proved to be true friends of the Spouse, while you have taken care to advance his groomsmen to be instructed in epithalamic songs.235
