ANTONIO VENEZIANO. - Fourteenth-century painter of Venetian origin. Between 1370 and 1388 he worked in Siena, Florence and Pisa. In Florence he came under the influence of the followers of Orcagna; in Pisa he certainly came into contact with the works of Traini, and in Siena, probably, with the works of Vanni, without however losing his ties with the pictorial milieu of the Venetian Gothic. Among his most important works must be counted the (half-destroyed) frescoes of the Camposanto in Pisa, where, on the south wall, he depicted certain stories of St. Ranieri (ca. 1384-87). Also in Pisa is an Assumption of his in the convent of S. Tommaso. His other works in Italy are at Torre degli Agli, near Florence (Last Judgment), and in S. Niccolò Reale in Palermo (Flagellation, with the Virgin, evangelists and prophets, 1388). Some attribute to him two Saints in the Vatican Pinacoteca. Paintings of his were in the museums of Altenburg, Göttingen and Hanover, and are in the Hurd collection in New York.
