DE MAISTRE, Joseph: V. MAISTRE, Joseph de

M. di C. D. M., 1914. He was ordained on 18 December 1850 and died in Rome on 11 April 1914. He devoted much of his activity to the struggle against Protestants, who, after 1870, attempted to mount a propaganda effort at the very heart of Catholicism.

He published a manual of philosophy: *Institutiones philosophicae* (Rome 1894; 4th and 5th eds. [ibid. 1929], edited by C. Boyer); *Il Protestantesimo, la sua origine, le sue basi* (ibid. 1902); *Il cattolico preminuto contro gli attacchi dei protestanti* (ibid. 1904); *Dissertazioni filosofiche* (ibid. 1907), etc.
