GINNASI, DOMENICO. - Cardinal, b. at Castel Bolognese to Francesco and Caterina Pallantieri around 1550; having earned a degree in law at Bologna in 1572, he entered the prelature under Gregory XIII and under Si-
V he distinguished himself in the struggle against brigands as vice-legate of Campagna and Marittima.
He was a referendary of the Segnatura when he was appointed bishop of Siponto (Jan. 17, 1586) and later renounced it in favor of his nephew (Nov. 5, 1607); during his government he held two synods there (1588 and 1592). Having returned to Rome under Clement VIII, he was governor of Fermo, then nuncio in Tuscany to the Grand Duke Ferdinand, then (Feb. 1600) to Philip III of Spain, and he collaborated in bringing about peace with France. Created cardinal of S. Pancrazio on June 9, 1604, he subsequently held the suburbicarian sees of Palestrina, Porto and Ostia-Velletri (July 15, 1630) and was dean of the Sacred College. He died at the age of 89 in Rome, on March 12, 1639. He was a friend of Sts. Camillus de Lellis and Joseph Calasanz. He founded the monastery of Corpus Domini for the Teresians and the church of S. Lucia near his palace, and a college for young students in Rome, and he proved munificent toward his birthplace and toward the churches of Siponto and Ostia. A printed commentary by him on the Psalms is extant (1630), and he left an unpublished one on the Pentateuch. He was buried at S. Lucia dei Ginnasi.
