GOTTI (Antonio), Girolamo Maria. - Cardinal, b. in Genoa on 30 March 1834, d. in Rome on 19 March 1916. He entered the Order of Discalced Carmelites at a very young age, under the name of Brother Girolamo Maria of the Immaculate Conception. Ordained a priest, he taught philosophy in the school of the Order and mathematics at the Naval School of Genoa.

A theologian at the Vatican Council (1869), he was appointed in 1871 procurator general of the Order and in 1881 prior general, reconfirmed in 1887 for the prudent action he carried out in causing the Order to flourish again.

Leo XIII wanted him, in 1892, as titular archbishop of Petra in order to send him as internuncio to Brazil, and in the Consistory of 29 Nov. 1895 he created him cardinal, with the title of St. Mary of the Scala. After having been prefect of the Congregation of Bishops and Regulars he passed, in 1902, to be prefect of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, where he carried out an indefatigable and intelligent activity for the growth of the Catholic missions. In the Conclave of 1903 he received seventeen votes for the pontificate.
