BINDING — L. in carved ivory and silver (12th c.) — Modena, Archivio del Duomo.
A scene, often of hunting, sometimes of daily life with human figures, is chased on the flap; it is then varnished. This technique, which reached its greatest splendor in the 16th–17th centuries, gives the effect of a genre painting. V. tavv. LXVII–LXVIII.
