ODO OF OURCAMP. - Theologian, also called Sussionensis since he was born in the diocese of Soissons, d. ca. 1171. He was a magister at the University of Paris, where he also held a canonry before entering the monastery of Ourscamp (diocese of Noyon). In 1147 Eugene III met him during his journey to France.
He was abbot in the years 1167-70. Summoned to Rome by Alexander III, he was created bishop of Tusculum, in whose fortress he hosted the Pope. O. had been a disciple not only of Abelard, but also of Anselm of Laon, John of Tours and Peter Lombard. He was in contact with his most celebrated contemporaries, among them St. Thomas of Canterbury and St. Hildegard, who wrote him two letters that have remained famous. He took part in the controversies of his time and sided against the nominalists. Among his works the Quaestiones are famous, which provide an exact picture of the method of teaching and in particular of the system of quodlibetal disputes.
