PAMELIUS (Jacques de Joigny de Pamèle). - Flemish priest, b. at Bruges on 13 May 1536, d. at Mons on 17 Sept. 1587. Master of arts on 27 March 1553; in 1561, still a subdeacon, he was appointed canon of St. Donatian at Bruges. Ordained priest on 21 Feb. 1562, in the same year he took his degree in theology at Louvain. He remained at Bruges until 1578, holding important ecclesiastical offices. He then went to St-Omer, where he was canon of the Cathedral in 1580 and archdeacon the following year. The bishop Msgr. De Six appointed him vicar general, and upon his death, in 1586, Philip II designated him to succeed him, but he died shortly before receiving the bull.
Extremely learned and endowed with ample financial means, he devoted himself to the search for important or precious works and prepared numerous editions of unpublished texts. At Antwerp in 1565 he printed the Micrologus de ecclesiasticis observationibus opusculum, a liturgical treatise attributed to more than one writer, but now certainly ascribed to Beroldus of Constance. There followed the Institutiones divinarum et saecularium lectionum of Cassiodorus (ibid. 1566); Divi Concilii Cypriani Carthaginiensis episcopi opera (ibid. 1568) with the various treatises arranged in chronological order; Liturgica Latinorum, in 2 vols. (Cologne 1571), a collection of liturgical texts (among them the antiphonary) concerning the Mass; De religionibus diversis non admittendis... ad Ordines Belgii relatio (Antwerp 1589), important for the religious state of Flanders at the end of the 16th century.
