RODE, JOHANNES. - Monastic reformer, b. at Trier ca. 1385, d. of plague at Montabaur on 1 Dec. 1439.
He studied at Heidelberg from 1404; in 1409 he was dean of the Faculty of Arts there, then bachelor in theology (1410), rector of the University (1413). In 1416 he entered the Carthusianmonastery of St. Alban in Trier and in 1419 became its prior.
Installed, with a papal dispensation, as Benedictine abbot of St. Matthias in Trier, he caused this abbey and the three other Benedictine abbeys of the city to flourish again. The Council of Basel appointed him (4 July 1434) general visitor of the provinces of Trier and Cologne, and from 1435 also of the dioceses of Mainz, Speyer, Worms and Strasbourg. He reformed Clus and Bursfeld, the Benedictine nuns of Marienberg above Boppard; he visited Hornbach, Stein on the Rhine, St. Gall and Reichenau. R. never separated himself from St. Matthias.
He left the Constitutiones for St. Matthias (draft and final version) and for Marienberg; De bono regimine abbatis (ed. by B. Pez, Bibliotheca ascetica, I, Regensburg 1723, pp. 157-204); and there are preserved in manuscript: Exercicium noviciorum, Exercicium breve de columnis septem, Exercicium bonum de Passione Domini, and Sermones pronunciati at the Council of Basel and during the visits to the monasteries.
