THEOLOGICAL STUDIES FOR LAYPEOPLE IN ITALY - They arose in the immediate postwar period (1945) in certain university cities of Italy, and tend to revive among laypeople the study of theology and of the other sacred sciences.
Their promoters were the Conventual Franciscans, who organized them and still direct them in Florence (from 25 Jan. 1945), Padua (21 Dec. 1945), Naples (27 Jan. 1946), Perugia (12 Jan. 1947), Messina (11 Jan. 1948); and as theological institutes for laypeople, with a more flexible program suited to the smaller non-university centers, in Assisi (from 12 Jan. 1947), Viterbo (21 Nov. 1947), Albano (4 Dec. 1947), Potenza (22 Feb. 1948), Nola (9 Feb. 1950).
The program of the s. t. per l. comprises a four-year course with fundamental subjects (dogmatics, moral theology, Sacred Scripture, canon law, Church history, philosophy, etc.); complementary subjects (patrology, Christian archaeology, art, pedagogy, sociology, etc.); special and free courses, literary, historical, scientific; and the corresponding examinations for the attainment of a diploma that recognizes the high cultural and religious formation for a possible teaching of religion in schools.
The organ of the foundation is the bimonthly review Città di vita (v.).
