Iosue being old admonisheth the people to keepe Gods commandementes. 12. and to auoide mariages, and al societie with gentiles, lest falling to idolatrie God as certainly punish them, as he hath benne benificial, and bountiful to them.
1And when a long time was passed, after that the Lord had given peace to Israel, all the nations round about being subdued, and Josue being now old, and far advanced in years:Passato poi molto tempo dopo che il Signore avea dato la pace ad Israele, e sottomesse a lui tutte le circonvicine nazioni, essendo già Giosuè assai vecchio e di età decrepita,AND when much time was passed, after that our Lord had geuen peace to Israel, al the nations being subdewed round about, and Iosue now verie ancient, and of a great age:Evoluto autem multo tempore, postquam pacem dederat Dominus Israëli, subjectis in gyro nationibus universis, et Josue jam longævo, et persenilis ætatis, 2Josue called for all Israel, and for the elders, and for the princes, and for the judges, and for the masters, and said to them: I am old, and far advanced in years,Chiamò a sé tutto Israele, e i seniori, e i principi, e i capitani, e i magistrati, e disse loro: Io son vecchio e di età cadente:Iosue called al Israel, and the elders, and the princes and the iudges, and the maisters, and said to them: I am old, and farre gone in age:vocavit Josue omnem Israëlem, majoresque natu, et principes ac duces, et magistros, dixitque ad eos: Ego senui, et progressioris ætatis sum: 3And you see all that the Lord your God hath done to all the nations round about, how he himself hath fought for you:E voi vedete tutto quello che il Signore Dio vostro ha fatto a tutte le vicine nazioni, e com'egli stesso ha combattuto per voi:and you see al thinges, that our Lord your God hath done to al the nations round about, how him selfe hath fought for you:vosque cernitis omnia, quæ fecerit Dominus Deus vester cunctis per circuitum nationibus, quomodo pro vobis ipse pugnaverit: 4And now since he hath divided to you by lot all the land, from the east of the Jordan unto the great sea, and many nations yet remain:E come adesso ha divisa a sorte tra voi tutta la terra dalla parte orientale del Giordano fino al mar grande, e come vi rimangan tuttora molte nazioni:and now because he hath by lotte diuided to you al the Land, from the East part of Iordan vnto the great sea, and manie nations yet remaine:et nunc quia vobis sorte divisit omnem terram, ab orientali parte Jordanis usque ad mare magnum, multæque adhuc supersunt nationes: 5The Lord your God will destroy them, and take them away from before your face, and you shall possess the land as he hath promised you.Il Signore Dio vostro le spargerà, e ve le leverà dagli occhi, e possederete il paese nel modo ch'ei vi ha promesso:Our Lord your God wil destroy them, and take them away from your face, and you shal possesse the Land, as he hath promised you.
6Only take courage, and be careful to observe all things that are written in the book of the law of Moses: and turn not aside from them neither to the right hand nor to the left:Soltanto che siate costanti, e solleciti in osservare tutte le cose che sono scritte nel libro della legge di Mosè: e non pieghiate nè a destra, nè a sinistra:Onlie take courage, and be careful, that you keepe al thinges which be written in the volume of the law of Moyses: and decline not from them neither to the right hand nor to the left:Tantum confortamini, et estote solliciti, ut custodiatis cuncta quæ scripta sunt in volumine legis Moysi: et non declinetis ab eis neque ad dexteram neque ad sinistram: 7Lest after that you are come in among the Gentiles, who will remain among you, you should swear by the name of their gods, and serve them, and adore them:Onde non avvenga che mescolandovi colle nazioni che saranno tra di voi, facciate giuramento nel nome de' loro dei, e serviate a questi, e gli adoriate:lest after that you are entred in to the Gentiles, which shal be among you, you sweare in the name of their goddes, and serue them, and adore them:ne postquam intraveritis ad gentes quæ inter vos futuræ sunt, juretis in nomine deorum earum, et serviatis eis, et adoretis illos: 8But cleave ye unto the Lord your God, as you have done until this day.Ma stiate uniti al Signore Dio vostro, come avete fatto fino a questo giorno.but cleaue to our Lord your God: which you haue done vntil this day.sed adhæreatis Domino Deo vestro: quod fecistis usque in diem hanc. 9And then the Lord God will take away before your eyes nations that are great and very strong, and no man shall be able to resist you.E allora il Signore Dio sterminerà dal vostro cospetto nazioni grandi e fortissime, e nissuno potrà resistere a voi.And then our Lord God wil take away in your sight the great nations and very strong, and no man shal be able to resist you.Et tunc auferet Dominus Deus in conspectu vestro gentes magnas et robustissimas, et nullus vobis resistere poterit. 10One of you shall chase a thousand men of the enemies: because the Lord your God himself will fight for you, as he hath promised. One of you shal pursew a thousand men of the enemies: because our Lord your God him self wil fight for you, as he hath promised.Unus e vobis persequetur hostium mille viros: quia Dominus Deus vester pro vobis ipse pugnabit, sicut pollicitus est.
11This only take care of with all diligence, that you love the Lord your God.Questo solo vi stia unicamente a cuore, di amare il Signore Dio vostro. This onlie beware very diligently before hand, that you loue our Lord your God.Hoc tantum diligentissime præcavete: ut diligatis Dominum Deum vestrum. 12But if you will embrace the errors of these nations that dwell among you, and make marriages with them, and join friendships:Ma se vorrete seguire gli errori di queste genti che abitano tra di voi, e fare con loro de' matrimoni, e contrarre amistà con esse; But if you wil cleaue to the errour of these nations, that dwel among you, and make mariages with them, and ioyne amitie:Quod si volueritis gentium harum, quæ inter vos habitant, erroribus adhærere, et cum eis miscere connubia, atque amicitias copulare: 13Know ye for a certainty that the Lord your God will not destroy them before your face, but they shall be a pit and a snare in your way, and a stumbling-block at your side, and stakes in your eyes, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you.Dovete sapere fin d'adesso, che il Signore Dio vostro non le sterminerà dinanzi a voi, ma saranno per voi una fossa, e un lacciuolo, e una pietra d'inciampo accanto a voi, e una spina negli occhi vostri, fino a tanto ch'ei vi tolga, e vi disperga da quest'ottima terra, ch'egli vi ha data.euen now know ye that our. Lord your God wil not destroy them before your face, but they shal be a pitte and a snare for you, and a stumbling blocke at your side, and stakes in your eies, til he take you away and destroy you from this excellent Land, which he hath deliuered to you.jam nunc scitote quod Dominus Deus vester non eas deleat ante faciem vestram, sed sint vobis in foveam ac laqueum, et offendiculum ex latere vestro, et sudes in oculis vestris, donec vos auferat atque disperdat de terra hac optima, quam tradidit vobis. 14Behold this day I am going into the way of all the earth, and you shall know with all your mind that of all the words which the Lord promised to perform for you, not one hath failed,Ecco che io oggi m'incammino verso il comun termine degli uomini, e voi riflettete con tutto l'animo, come di tutte le parole che il Signore promise di adempiere a favor vostro, una sola non è rimisa senza effetto.Behold I this day enter into the way of al flesh, and you shal know with al your minde that al the wordes, which our Lord promised that he would performe to you, one is not escaped without effect. 15Therefore as he hath fulfilled in deed, what he promised, and all things prosperous have come: so will he bring upon you all the evils he hath threatened, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you,Siccome adunque egli ha eseguite di fatto tutte le sue promesse e tutto è andato a seconda; così egli manderà sopra di voi tutti i mali, dei quali vi ha minacciati, fino a tanto che vi abbia levati, e dispersi da quest'ottima terra, che vi ha data.Therfore as he hath fulfilled in deede that which he promised, and al thinges prosperous haue come: so wil he bring vpon you what euils soeuer he hath threatened, til he take you away and destroy you from this excellent Land, which he hath deliuered to you,Sicut ergo implevit opere quod promisit, et prospera cuncta venerunt: sic adducet super vos quidquid malorum comminatus est, donec vos auferat atque disperdat de terra hac optima, quam tradidit vobis, 16When you shall have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which he hath made with you, and shall have served strange gods, and adored them: then shall the indignation of the Lord rise up quickly and speedily against you, and you shall be taken away from this excellent land, which he hath delivered to you.Perchè avrete violato il patto fermato dal Signore Dio vostro con voi, e avrete servito agli dei stranieri, e gli avrete adorati: il furor del Signore sorgerà subitamente contro di voi, e sarete levati da questa terra ottima che egli vi ha data.because you haue transgressed the couenant of our Lord your God, which he hath made with you, and haue serued strange goddes, and adored them: quickly and in hast shal the furie of our Lord ryse against you, and you shal be taken away from this excellent Land, which he hath deliuered to you.eo quod præterieritis pactum Domini Dei vestri, quod pepigit vobiscum, et servieritis diis alienis, ad adoraveritis eos: cito atque velociter consurget in vos furor Domini, et auferemini ab hac terra optima, quam tradidit vobis.

Long time. Josue governed only ten years after the distribution of the land. Towards the close of his life, perceiving that the Israelites were too indolent in subduing the people of the country, and fearing lest they should by degrees begin to imitate their corrupt manners, he called a general assembly either at his own city, or at Silo, or more probably at Sichem, (as it is mentioned [in] Josue 24:1, which seems to give farther particulars of this assembly) and laid before his people, in the strongest terms, the dangers to which they would be exposed, by entertaining a friendship for the enemies of God, and by abandoning him. (Calmet)
Menochius
He called together all the heads of the people. (Menochius)

Worthington
For you. God fought for his people three ways: 1. By destroying their enemies himself in a miraculous manner, as he did the Egyptians; 2. By assisting their endeavours, as at Jericho, and in the victory of Gabaon, when he caused the walls of the former town to fall down, and hurled stones upon the fleeing enemy near the latter; (chap. 10.) 3. By giving courage and strength to Israel, while he filled their opponents with dismay, and this was most frequently the case. He continues to assist his servants in their spiritual warfare against the world, the flesh, and the devil, in all these different ways. (Worthington)

And now. Hebrew, "Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations, which remain to be subdued, to be an inheritance for your tribes from the Jordan, (these two words are transposed, and should come after; Calmet) with all the nations that I have cut off---even unto the great sea westward." He mildly expostulates with them for not following up his victories, by reducing the few scattered nations whom he had abandoned to them as a prey. (Haydock)
Haydock
They ought to be considered not only as the enemies of God, but also as unjust detainers of another's right, and Josue promises that nothing will be wanting on the part of God to render their reduction easy, if they will but do their duty to Him and to themselves. (Haydock)

Menochius
Come in, an expression which may denote any familiarity, or marriage. (Menochius)
Drusius
Hebrew is in the form of a prohibition, "Come not among (have no connections with) these nations....Neither mention their gods, nor swear (or cause to swear by them.") The psalmist (Psalm 15:4,) says, speaking either of idols, (Haydock) or of sinners, Nor will I be mindful of their names by my lips. Osee 2:16. says, She shall call me no more Baali, ("my lord," a term applied by wives to their husbands) on account of its reminding one of the idol Baal. Hence David calls Jerobaal, or Gedeon, Jeroboschot, 2 Kings 11:21. St. Paul would not have Christians so much as to name the sins of impurity, Ephesians 5:3. The more religious Jews will not even mention an idol, or an unclean animal; and they beg pardon before they speak of a heretic. (Drusius)
Calmet
Some understand that the worship of idols is meant by naming them, as those who invoked the name of Jesus Christ, were his disciples, Acts 9:14., 1 Timothy 2:19., and Exodus 20:24. To swear by idols is always sinful, (Exodus 23:13,) while it is an act of religion to swear on proper occasions, by the name of God. Theophrastus (ap. Josephus, contra Apion I.) observes, that the laws of the Tyrians prohibit the using of foreign oaths, such as that of the Corban, which was peculiar to the Jews. (Calmet)

Side. Hebrew, "snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your side." Children and slaves were formerly beaten on this part, Ecclesiasticus 30:12., and 42:5. Horace (epod. iv.) says, Ibericis peruste funibus latus. The first word St. Jerome seems to have read with th at the end, as peth, means a hole, (Calmet) by which means it was customary to take wild beasts, and to annoy the enemy. (Haydock)

23:3
God fought for the Isiachtes three ma• of wayes: sometimes alone, they not fighting at al; as when the Aegyptians were drowned in the read sea: sometimes they doing his cōmandmentes he apparently assisted them, as in the siege of Iericho, the walles miraculously fel downe (c. 6) & haile stones killed their enimies (chap. 10.) but most times inuisibly, as wel by geuing them courege, as by striking their enimies with terrour. And al these wayes God also fighteth for his seruantes in spiritual warres against the diuel, the flesh, & the world.

… O Lord, who is like unto Thee?’ And again, ‘Who is God, but the Lord; and who is God, but our Lord?’ Therefore Moses, when he saw that the people were advancing, by degrees initiated them in the understanding of the monarchy and the faith of one God, as he says in the following words: ‘Thou shalt not make mention of the names of other gods;’
Pseudo-Clement The Clementine Homilies 16.6
… And elsewhere: ‘Let the gods that have not made the heavens and the earth perish;’ as if those who had made them were not to perish. And in another place, when it says, ‘Take heed to thyself lest thou go and serve other gods whom thy fathers knew not,’ it speaks as if other gods existed whom they were not to follow. And again:
Pseudo-Clement The Clementine Homilies 16.8

7. NE, etc. JURETIS IN NOMINE DEORUM EARUM.
