Clemente PP. XIV.
* Ad futuram rei memoriam.

Annals. The privileges of the theological academy instituted in the public university of Wisdom in the city are confirmed, and new ones are also granted. Clement PP. XIV. To the memory of future events.
1 § 1. By commission entrusted to Us by divine providence, and by the duty of pastoral solicitude, We strive to excite and promote the studies of letters, and especially of the theological faculty, among the Christian faithful called to the vineyard of the Lord by suitable means, and We willingly provide that due honour be rendered to virtue, just as We know it to be expedient in the Lord for the glory of almighty God, the honour of religion and its increase, and the safeguard of the Catholic faith. § 2. Indeed, our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Clement XI, erected and instituted under his auspices in the beloved city a theological academy hitherto unknown, and granted and assigned to it a place in the buildings of the public university called Wisdom of the same city for holding its meetings and performing its functions. Subsequently, however, when the same predecessor Clement learned that those who had given their name to such an academy were making particular progress in the disciplines of sacred theology and ecclesiastical history, so that greater increases might be hoped for in the future, which would bring most sweet and abundant fruits to the Church of God, by his letters issued in similar form as a Brief on the twenty-third day of April in the year seventeen hundred and seventeen, he not only confirmed and approved the institution of the same academy and the concession of perpetual use of the place assigned in the said university, but also the constitutions and statutes drawn up for the right and happy governance of the same academy, and prescribed and granted other things, and also constituted and appointed certain cardinals of the Holy Roman Church as protectors and defenders of the same academy, and other things as are more fully contained in the aforesaid letters of the same predecessor Clement, the tenor of which We wish to be held as fully and sufficiently expressed and inserted word for word in the present document.
2 § 3. Indeed, the fruits which the same Clement foresaw from such an academy, subsequently, with the help of divine grace, yielded so abundantly that not only did our predecessor of blessed memory, Pope Benedict XIII, likewise enrich it with other favours and graces, but also the venerable Rafael Cosmas, while he lived, a presbyter cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, called of St. Jerome, liberally increased and enriched it with revenues. § 4. But We ourselves also, who at that time held the honour of the cardinalate, and were numbered among the other cardinals of the Holy Roman Church as protectors and defenders of the same academy, with singular joy of Our heart, by attending the exercises of the aforesaid academy, have admired many ecclesiastical men versed in that faculty, and also masters and doctors, and others distinguished by other honour, joined in the bond of charity, aspiring to a more sublime knowledge of divine things with the aid of heavenly grace, and the same academy under the patronage and defence of Our venerable brothers, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, John Francis, bishop of the Sabines and of Albano; John Francis, bishop of Praeneste, Stoppani; and Our beloved sons, Ferdinand Mary, presbyter cardinal of the same Holy Roman Church of Rubeis, and Flavius, likewise deacon cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, Chigi, respectively named, who as most ample patrons of sciences never cease to care with the greatest zeal and vigilance for the progress and increase of this academy, We rejoice greatly in the Lord. § 5. In order therefore that those who pursue theological studies with such utility to the orthodox faith may do so with more eager spirit, We have decreed to distinguish the academy itself with new favours of Our pontifical beneficence. Wherefore, by Our own motion, and from certain knowledge, and mature deliberation of Ours, and from the fullness of apostolic power, We confirm and approve all and whatsoever privileges, graces, and indults granted, bestowed, and conferred by the aforesaid Clement and Benedict, Our predecessors, to the aforesaid academy and to those who have given their name to it, or shall give it in the future, in any manner and at any time, and, insofar as it is necessary, We again grant and indulge them.
3 ndi Mary, presbyter cardinal of the same Holy Roman Church of Rubeis, and Flavius, likewise deacon cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, Chigi, respectively named, who as most ample patrons of sciences never cease to care with the greatest zeal and vigilance for the progress and increase of this academy, We rejoice greatly in the Lord.
4 § 6. And furthermore, so that labour may not be without its reward, but that due honour may be rendered to it, by Our motion, knowledge, and power, with the fullness of doctrine being equal, We establish and ordain that in any year, one person who for a complete three-year period shall have applied himself with assiduous study to the work of sacred theology in the said academy, and shall have participated in the exercises which are customarily held in that same academy, and shall have made such progress and given such evidence of learning that by the greater number of votes of the censors of the same academy he shall be deemed worthy, being given public testimony of this matter by Our beloved son, now and for the time being existing master of Our apostolic palace, may be promoted freely to the degrees of doctor and master in sacred theology by the college of theologians, and may be able to wear the insignia of such degrees, and publicly and privately also in any universities of general studies to teach that same theology, and to dispute concerning it, and to exercise acts befitting such degrees, and to enjoy equally all the privileges, prerogatives, graces, favours, and indults by which others promoted to the aforesaid degrees in universities of general studies do by right, use, style, or custom, or otherwise in any way whatsoever use, enjoy, possess, and rejoice, and to be able to use, enjoy, possess, and rejoice in the future in all things and through all things, just as if they had received those same degrees in such universities, and likewise to be able to use, enjoy, possess, and rejoice freely and lawfully; We grant permission and faculty.
5 § 7. Decreeing that these same present letters shall always be firm, valid, and effective, and shall produce and obtain their full and complete effects, and that they shall be inviolably and firmly observed by those to whom it pertains, and whenever it shall pertain for the time being.
6 § 8. And so in the foregoing matters We command all and each ordinary judges, and also delegates and auditors of causes of the apostolic palace, and cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, even legates a latere, and nuncios of the Apostolic See to judge and determine, and [declare] null and void if otherwise anything concerning these matters shall happen to be attempted by anyone whatsoever with any authority, knowingly or unknowingly. Notwithstanding apostolic constitutions and ordinances, and all other things to the contrary whatsoever. Given at Rome at St. Mary Major under the Fisherman's ring on the twenty-seventh day of April in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy, in the first year of Our pontificate.

11 § 1. Our venerable brother Felix Joseph, bishop of Ypres, caused it to be set forth to Us that, to increase the worship and devotion of the faithful toward the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, he wishes to erect for his whole diocese in some church of the city of Ypres a certain new confraternity of both sexes under the title of Perpetual Adoration and Prayer of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist; and he presented to Us suppliant prayers that We should deign to unite the same confraternity to be erected by him with the confraternity under the same title of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Holy Sacrament erected in the distinguished collegiate church of St. Martin of the city of Liège, which is aggregated to the archconfraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament of the City, and to bestow upon the same confraternity and its brothers and sisters the same indulgences with which those same confraternities of the Most Holy Sacrament are blessed, by apostolic benignity.
12 We therefore, inclined by such petitions, by the authority delivered to us by the Lord, and trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, confirm the confraternity to be erected by the aforesaid venerable brother, the bishop of Ypres, for perpetual prayer at every hour of the day to the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist for the city and diocese of Ypres, and for all who, after it shall have been canonically erected, shall wish to be enrolled in it; and by our own motion we unite it to another confraternity of the most holy Sacrament in the distinguished collegiate church of St. Martin of the city of Liège erected from the year 1575, and aggregated to the archconfraternity of the most holy Sacrament of the city, and we communicate all and singular the indulgences of which the aforesaid archconfraternity of the city enjoys; and moreover we graciously grant all and singular those same indulgences with which other confraternities instituted for the perpetual adoration of the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist are enriched. To all the brothers and sisters of the said confraternity, to be erected as above, praying piously before the most august Sacrament of the Eucharist on the day of entrance, and for a full hour thereafter, we grant a plenary indulgence once in each month. Likewise, by special grace to the same brothers and sisters, truly penitent, having confessed, and refreshed by holy communion, and praying piously according to our intention for some space of time, we impart a plenary indulgence on the Sunday within the octave of the most holy Body of Christ, on the Sunday within the octave of All Saints, and on the feast of the Epiphany, on the first Sunday of Lent, and the first Sunday of May, and on four festivities within the year, to be designated by the same venerable brother, the bishop of Ypres; and we grant and concede that all and singular indulgences, which we will to have force in perpetual future times, may be applied to the souls of the faithful departed. Notwithstanding our and our apostolic chancery's rule concerning the non-granting of indulgences in imitation of others, and other apostolic constitutions and ordinances, and all other things to the contrary whatsoever.
13 We will moreover that to copies or exemplars of these present letters, even if printed, subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of a person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith be given as would be given to these same presents, if they were exhibited or shown. Given at Rome at St. Mary Major under the Fisherman's ring on the twenty-seventh day of April in the year 1670, in the first year of our pontificate.
