Exposcit tuae devotionis
1 Innocenzo Vescovo, servo dei servi di Dio, al diletto figlio Giovanni Abate del Monastero Cistercense della diocesi di Châlons, salute e benedizione Apostolica. La sincerità della tua devozione e l'onestà della tua religiosità esigono che noi, come colui che tu sei da noi amato con speciale dilettazione, così anche il tuo e altri quattro principali Monasteri del tuo Ordine Cistercense dopo e per mezzo del detto tuo Monastero immediatamente fondati, i quali sono chiamati le prime quattro figlie di quello, li eleviamo con onori degni e li prosequiamo con favori e grazie speciali. 1. Poiché dunque, come conteneva la petizione presentata a Noi di recente da parte tua, dai privilegi e indulti Apostolici concessi a te e agli altri quattro Abati dei Monasteri predetti per il tempo essendo, affinché tutti gli Ordini minori potessero essere conferiti alle persone del medesimo Ordine dentro i Monasteri predetti e potessero benedire i palii dell'altare e tutti gli ornamenti Ecclesiastici e usare della mitra e dell'anello e di altri insegni Pontificali, e inoltre in questi stessi e negli altri Monasteri e Priorati a loro soggetti e nelle Chiese Parrocchiali e altre Chiese che comunemente o divisamente a loro appartenessero, benché non fossero pienamente soggetti a essi, potessero elargire la benedizione dopo le solennità delle Messe, dei Vespri e dei Matutini (purché nella benedizione di questo genere alcun Vescovo o Legato della Sede Apostolica non fosse presente);

Testo inglese
1 Innocent, Bishop, servant of the servants of God, to our beloved son John, Abbot of the Monastery of Cîteaux, of the diocese of Chalon, greeting and Apostolic benediction. The sincerity of your devotion and the honesty of your religion merit that we should exalt both you, whom we regard with special affection, and your monastery and four other principal monasteries of your Cistercian Order founded immediately after and through your said monastery, called the first four daughters of that Order, with fitting honors and pursue them with special favors and graces. 1. Since therefore, as the petition lately presented to us on your behalf contained, from the privileges and Apostolic indults granted to you and to the Abbots of the other four monasteries aforesaid existing for the time being, that all minor orders may be conferred upon persons of the same Order within the said monasteries and altar cloths and all ecclesiastical ornaments blessed and mitre and ring and other pontifical insignia used, and moreover in the same and other monasteries and priories subject to them and parochial and other churches pertaining to them commonly or severally, although they were not fully subject to them, blessing after the solemnities of Masses, Vespers and Matins (provided that in such blessing no Bishop or Legate of the Apostolic See were present) to be granted;
2 2. and churches and monasteries of the said Order, as often as it should be opportune, provided they were not polluted by homicide, to be able to reconcile, water first blessed by some Catholic Bishop, as is the custom, having been obtained, at various times and in various places, sometimes individually, sometimes together, as the said privileges teach, it has been granted:
3 3. and by some it is questioned whether you and the said Abbots may use altar cloths and other such ornaments outside the monasteries of the Order itself and also those which pertain to the monasteries and places of the said Order; and whether they can bless in any other monasteries and places of the said Order of either sex, although your predecessor Abbots from so long a time, of which the memory of men to the contrary does not exist, have been accustomed to do all the aforesaid things, or the greater part thereof. We, who bear the said Order itself before others in the bowels of charity and intend to adorn it with no fewer graces and privileges than our predecessors have done, being inclined by your supplications in this matter, to you and your successors and to the said Abbots of the other four monasteries aforesaid now and existing for the time being, that henceforth for perpetual future times you may bless the aforesaid and whatever other vestments and ecclesiastical ornaments, corporeal vessels for the reservation of the sacred Eucharist and whatever images are comprehended, in the places and houses of the said Order and consecrate chalices, both of the said Order and if they should sometimes be brought to you from elsewhere:
4 4. and altars newly constructed or moved, restored or changed in any places of the said Order, the sacred Chrism first received from some Catholic Bishop, to consecrate: 5. and also solemn blessing after the solemnities of Masses, Vespers and Matins in any monasteries, houses and places of the said Order of either sex, the degrees of superiority among you being observed, to be granted.
5 6. And lest the monks of the said Order be compelled to run hither and thither outside the cloister for receiving the orders of Subdeacon and Deacon; to you and your successors, that to any monks of the said Order: and to the other four Abbots aforesaid and their successors, that to the Religious of their said monasteries, whom you shall find suitable for this, the orders of Subdeacon and Deacon in this manner otherwise duly to confer:
6 7. and when the nature of business pressing in for the time shall have required it, before the day shall dawn, around however the diurnal light, so that it may be imputed as a fault neither to you nor to the priest thus celebrating in your presence, Mass in your presence, in the presence of each of you and your families with you present by yourselves to celebrate and by another suitable priest to have celebrated.
7 8. And because sometimes on account of the office of blessing, which is conferred upon the Abbots and Abbesses of your Order by Bishops, contentions and injuries to the privileges of your Order arise under the pretext that the aforesaid Bishops, from the conferring of such an office, afterwards claim to have some jurisdiction and superiority over them and their Monasteries against the privileges of your Order, to you and your aforesaid successors only, so that you may be able to confer the office of blessing upon any Abbots and Abbesses of your Order and so that the aforesaid Abbots and Abbesses may be able to receive the said office from you and your aforesaid successors freely and lawfully, by Apostolic authority and from certain knowledge by the tenor of these presents with special gift of grace we grant. Notwithstanding the constitutions and ordinances of the Apostles, and also all those things which have been granted in the letters of privileges and indults of this kind, and other things contrary in any way whatsoever. With the provision that you use this concession sparingly in celebrating or causing to be celebrated before the time: because, since our Lord God's Son Jesus Christ is immolated in the office of the altar, who is the brightness of eternal light, it is fitting that this be done not in the darkness of night but in light.
8 9. But because it would be difficult to carry these Letters to each and every place where it should be expedient; we have willed and by the aforesaid authority decree that to transcripts of the same, subscribed by the hand of a public Notary requested for that purpose and furnished with your seal or that of some Ecclesiastical court or person constituted in Ecclesiastical dignity, that same undoubted faith shall be given which would be given to these presents, if they were exhibited or shown. Let no one whatsoever presume to infringe this page of our concession, will and constitution, or to act against it with rash presumption. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of Almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.
