= In quorum fidem etc.
CLXXXVII.
Approbation of the religious society of sisters of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus erected in Europe by rite.
Leo PP. XII.
1 For future remembrance. Placed in the supreme seat of the Church militant by the ineffable abundance of divine clemency, We willingly establish by the protection of Our apostolic office those things which can conduce to the increase of divine worship and the spiritual utility of Christ's faithful. When therefore it was requested of Us by repeated petitions that We approve by apostolic authority the constitutions and rules of a certain religious society of sisters of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus recently erected at Paris and in very many other dioceses of the Gauls, and also outside Gaul, indeed even in Europe by rite, as is asserted, whose care and solicitude have been entrusted with the instruction of girls and the formation of their morals, We, in a matter of such importance, committed those to be examined to a particular congregation, which is composed of certain cardinals of the Holy Roman Church for the business and consultations of bishops and regulars presiding, and the secretary of the same.
2 § 2. What indeed, after mature discussion, was brought forth by the aforesaid particular congregation, in the decree which We here ordered to be set forth, appears clearly, namely.
3 Decree of the sacred congregation particularly deputed by Our Most Holy Lord Leo Pope XII concerning the approbation of the constitutions and rules of the society of Sisters of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus at Paris. The sacred congregation particularly deputed by Our Lord Leo Pope XII on the fifth day of May in the year one thousand eight hundred twenty-six by the most eminent and reverend cardinals of the Holy Roman Church Pacca prefect and relator, Bertazzoli, Pedicini, and the lord secretary of the same sacred congregation with vote, having regard to the testimonial letters and commendations of the archbishops of Paris, Bordeaux, and Canterbury, as well as of the bishops of Amiens, Grenoble, Poitiers, Coron, Orleans, Le Mans, and Auxerre, in whose dioceses the religious houses of the society of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus are situated, and there the sisters of the same society are gathered together, having seen what was to be seen and considered what was to be considered in many sessions of the same society and institute, the constitutions and rules according to the articles inserted with certain emendations and corrections proposed by the same most eminent fathers and by the lord secretary, approved by all votes and decreed that supplication be made to the Most Holy One, that to the same society there preside perpetually a protector from the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church residing at the holy See, and to the house secretary made report with the Most Holy One. Given at Rome on the nineteenth day of July in the year one thousand eight hundred twenty-six. And report having been made of the foregoing to Our Most Holy Lord by the secretary of the sacred congregation in audience on the twenty-first day of the same month and year, His Holiness approved and confirmed the decree, and benignly granted the prayers of the same sisters, choosing and deputing as protector of the society the most eminent and reverend lord cardinal Pedicini. Given at Rome.
4 Thus it is found in the autograph register of the decrees of the sacred congregation of bishops and regulars, which is asserted to be kept in the secretariat of the sacred congregation. = Acta Romana, tom. IVII.
5 In witness whereof, etc. Given at Rome this sixteenth day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred twenty-six. Peter C. archbishop and substitute.
6 § 3. In order, however, that the aforesaid decree, already approved by Us in all respects, may remain firm, We confirm it by these present apostolic letters. We therefore, wishing to regard the aforesaid sisters and individual persons, to whom these letters are favorable, with singular benevolence, and absolving them from any excommunication, interdict, and other ecclesiastical censures, sentences and penalties, imposed in any manner whatsoever and for whatever cause, should they perchance incur any, for this reason alone, and considering them absolved, graciously assenting to the wishes of the same sisters, We confirm by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, the aforesaid decree and Our approval thereof, as well as the election of the protector and all things expressed and contained therein. Decreeing that these present letters are firm, valid, and efficacious, and shall be and remain so, and shall produce their full and complete effects and obtain them, and shall most fully avail the aforesaid sisters and others to whom they pertain, and shall pertain for the time being at any time whatsoever, in all things and through all things, and shall be inviolably observed by them respectively; and thus in the aforesaid matters by whatever ordinary judges and delegates, even auditors of causes of Our apostolic palace, it ought to be judged and decided, and null and void if otherwise anything contrary to these things shall be attempted by anyone whatsoever with any authority, knowingly or unknowingly.
7 5. Notwithstanding the constitutions and ordinances of the apostles, and those issued in universal, provincial and synodal councils, whether general or special constitutions and ordinances, and all other things whatsoever to the contrary. Given at Rome at St. Peter's under the fisherman's ring on the twenty-second day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred twenty-six, in the fourth year of Our pontificate.
