BUGLIO, Giovanni Antonio, Baron del Buglio. - Distinguished diplomat of the Holy See (in documents: Jo. Ant. Pulico, or also Belleonix, baro Burgii; in Pastor: Puglioni), b. at Mineo (Sicily) at the end of the 15th century, d. at Palermo between 1545 and 1548. Finding himself passing through Rome, the Pope invited him into his service, sending him, in 1523, as nuncio to Hungary with Card. Vio, legate to the two courts of Germany and Hungary, to promote the union of the Christian princes against the Turk. In 1524, Clement VII sent him back as special nuncio to Hungary, torn by the quarrels of the nobles and threatened by the Turkish invasion. B. won the admiration and love of that nation, to the point of being esteemed there as a compatriot, exerting himself in every way to save it from the extreme danger, though in vain. After the unhappy day of Mohács (29 Aug. 1526) in which, on account of King Louis II, recalled to Rome, he was appointed commissary general of the militia against the Colonna. In 1527 he was once again in Hungary; in 1529 nuncio at the court of Sicily. In 1530 he was sent to the court of Henry VIII, in which difficult post he remained three years. Steph. Ehses (Römische Dohum. zur Gesch... Heinrichs VIII v. England, Paderborn 1893) laments that he was unable to find B.'s reports on this nunciature. From 1534 he was again assigned as nuncio to the court of Sicily, continuing to enjoy the full confidence of Paul III. Especially worthy of note is B.'s patriotism, who advised Clement VII to remain neutral in the quarrels between Charles V and Francis I («lassi rumpere le teste a li Barbari»), taking care to fortify Italy, which he longed to see independent of every foreign influence and united in a single confederate State, with the Pope at its head.
