CAPODIFERRO, GIROLAMO. - Cardinal b. in 1502 into the Recanati family, Neapolitan nobles, he took the maternal surname of C. Having entered as a youth the court of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (later Pope Paul III), he soon became part of the Roman Curia. In 1537 he was nuncio in Portugal, while with King John III there were serious disputes especially regarding the converted Jews; he then went to France, where he worked hard to have Francis I accept the bull convoking the Council of Trent. In the same year, appointed treasurer of the Apostolic Chamber, together with Cardinal Ascanio Sforza he was charged with collecting from the churches and other pious places more money for the war against the Turks. Appointed on 9 Dec. 1544 cardinal of the title of St. George in Velabro, he was datary and then governor of Romagna. He returned to France as legate (1547) to interest Francis I in the Catholic restoration of England, and again in Apr. 1553 to Henry II to arrange peace between him and Emperor Charles V, but without obtaining anything; and at the beginning of Oct. he returned to Italy. In Rome he built the magnificent palace later passed to the Spada. Died in Rome on 1 Dec. 1559 and is buried in S. Maria della Pace.
