MAREOTTI, TREBAZIO

MAREOTTI, TREBAZIO. — Theologian and popular apostle of the Friars Minor Conventual, born in the first half of the 16th century at Penna S. Giovanni (Marche), died at Assisi on 3 August, not 1 August or 28 December, 1599.

His true surname was often given in erroneous forms (Mariotti, Marecoccio, Macrotti, etc.). A controversialist and teacher of theology, he was first a lecturer at Camerino, then a bachelor at the University of Padua (ca. 1577), regent at Cremona (1582) and at Milan (ca. 1584–86), then commissioner of the new Confraternity of the Cordbearers (1587) and guardian at Turin (1590). There he was greatly esteemed by Carlo Emanuele, who appointed him his «theological doctor» and court preacher, and subsequently, by letters patent of 29 January 1590, professor of Sacred Scripture at the University of Turin.

Meanwhile M., a man of extremely austere life, had crossed Italy barefoot as a popular apostle «of marvelous eloquence and singular learning»; he was also custodian of the sacred convent of Assisi twice (1584 and 1594–95). Already invited in 1592 by the archbishops of Avignon and Besançon, and with special papal authorization of 7 March 1598, M. went to France to establish and spread the Third Order and to continue his apostolate. He withdrew to the sacred convent of Assisi the following year, and died there with a great reputation for holiness.

Among his writings, the following should be noted: Pentalogium peripateticum... in aliquot Averroistas, de forma novissima et hominis specificus... (Padua 1577); Eccellentissimi discorsi... (Turin 1603, posthumous); Discorsi spirituali sopra l'orazione domenicale (there 1590, they are in no. 50).
