MAREOTTI, Trebazio. – Theologian, popular preacher, of the Conventual Friars Minor, born in the first half of the 16th century at Penna S. Giovanni (Marche), died at Assisi on 3 August, not 1 August or 28 December, 1599.
His true surname was often presented in erroneous forms (Mariotti, Marecoccio, Macrotti, etc.). A controversial theologian and master of theology, he was first a lecturer at Camerino, then bachelor at the Studium of Padua (c. 1577), regent at Cremona (1582) and at Milan (c. 1584–86), then commissioner of the new Confraternity of the Cordigeri (1587) and guardian at Turin (1590). There he was highly esteemed by Charles Emmanuel, who appointed him his theological doctor and court preacher, and again, by patents of 29 January 1590, professor of Sacred Scripture at the University of Turin.
Meanwhile, M., of most austere life, had traversed Italy barefoot, a popular apostle of remarkable eloquence and singular learning; twice also he was custodian of the sacred convent of Assisi (1584, and 1594–95). Already invited in 1592 by the archbishops of Avignon and Besançon, with special papal authorization of 7 March 1598, M. went to France to establish and propagate the Third Order and continue his apostolate. He retired to the sacred convent of Assisi the following year and died there in great repute for holiness.
Among his writings are to be noted: Pentalogium peripateticum... in aliquot Averroistas, de forma novissima et hominis specifica... (Padua 1577); Eccellentissimi discorsi... (Turin 1603, posthumous); Discorsi spirituali sopra l'orazione domenicale (ibid. 1590, in n. 50).
