PERAUDI, RAIMONDO. - Cardinal, b. in 1435 at Sugères in the diocese of Saintes, d. at Viterbo on 5 Sept. 1505, Augustinian prior in his homeland, then apostolic protonotary. As papal nuncio in 1487 he was given the task of moving Frederick III of Germany to war against the Turk and of preaching the Crusade and the related indulgence to that end. For this he negotiated a peace among the princes of the West; but he did not succeed in imposing a one-year tithe on the German churches and benefices. He worked with the King of France in 1488 and then at the Diet of Frankfurt of July 1489, and he urged the princes and the King of Poland to the Rome meeting of March 1490.
Despite an initial adherence of Frederick III and of his son Maximilian, the Crusade was not preached and nothing concrete was obtained. Appointed bishop of Gurk (Carinthia) on 21 Feb. 1493, he was created cardinal by Alexander VI at the request of Frederick III on 20 Sept. 1493. The following year he was in Rome (22 Apr.) and in Nov. the Pope sent him to Florence to negotiate with Charles VIII; but P. sided with the King and accompanied him first to Rome and then also in Apr. 1495 to the South, hoping to induce him to the Crusade. Having returned to Rome in Feb. 1499, he was legate at Perugia and on 5 Oct. 1500 was created legate to the Emperor; in 1501-1502 he traveled all through Germany preaching the Crusade again without result. On 6 Oct. 1501 he renounced the church of Gurk in order to hold that of Toul in commendam.
