DRAGIŠIĆ, GIORGIO. - Croatian Franciscan, humanist, philosopher, theologian, b. at Srebrenica in Bosnia around the middle of the 15th century, d. at Barletta in 1520. He studied in Italy, in Paris and Oxford; in 1470 he was in Rome in the retinue of Card. Bessarion; in 1472 he was the tutor of Guidobaldo, son of Federico of Montefeltro. In 1485 in Florence he was master of theology and rector of the Franciscan school; he was summoned by Lorenzo the Magnificent to educate his sons Giovanni (the future Leo X) and Pietro. In 1507 he was elected bishop of Cagli and in 1512 promoted titular archbishop of Nazareth, and as such, in 1515, he took part in the Fifth Lateran Council.
D. is placed among the foremost theologians of his time and appears as a reconciler of Platonism with Aristotelianism. In the case of Savonarola, he took his side, writing Propheticae solutiones pro Hieronymo Savonarola (Florence 1497). Among his works mention should be made of: Logica nova secundum mentem Scoti et B. Thomae Aquinatis aliorumque, ibid. 1480 (3rd ed., Rome 1520, under the title Artis dialecticae praecepta vetera ac nova).
