VAUGHAN, HERBERT. — Cardinal, b. at Gloucester on 15 Apr. 1832, d. at Westminster on 19 June 1903.

Descended from an ancient family that remained steadfastly loyal to the Catholic Church, at the age of sixteen he followed his ecclesiastical vocation; he studied at the Jesuit College in Bruges (Belgium) and then at the Gregorian University in Rome (1851).
