Ioiada the Hiegh priest annoynteth and crowneth Ioas king. 12. causeth Athalia to be slaine, 16. idolatrie to be destroyed. 18. and Gods seruice aduanced.
1And in the seventh year Joiada being encouraged, took the captains of hundreds, to wit, Azarias the son of Jeroham, and Ismahel the son of Johanan, and Azarias the son of Obed, and Maasias the son of Adaias, and Elisaphat the son of Zechri: and made a covenant with them.Ma l'anno settimo Joiada, fattosi animo, si unì coi centurioni, viene a dire, Azaria figliuolo di Jeroham, e Ismahel figliuolo di Johanan, e Azaria figliuolo di Obed, e Maasia figliuolo di Adaia, ed Elisaphat figliuolo di Zechri: e fece lega con essi.AND in the seuenth yeare Ioiada taking courage, tooke the centurions, to witte, Azarias the sonne of Ieroham, and Ismahel the sonne of Iohanan, Azarias also the sonne of Obed, and Maasias the sonne of Adaias, and Elisaphat the sonne of Zechri: and made a couenant with them. 2And they went about Juda, and gathered together the Levites out of all the cities of Juda, and the chiefs of the families of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.E questi andando attorno pel paese di Giuda raunarono da tutte le città di Giuda i Leviti, e i principi delle famiglie d'Israele, i quali si portarono a Gerusalemme.Who going about Iuda, gathered together the Leuites out of al the cities of Iuda, and the princes of the families of Israel, and they came into Ierusalem. 3And all the multitude made a covenant with the king in the house of God: and Joiada said to them: Behold the king’s son shall reign, as the Lord hath said of the sons of David.E tutta questa gente strinse lega col re nella casa di Dio. Therfore al the multitude made a couenant with the king in the house of God: and Ioiada sayd to them: Behold the kinges sonne shal reigne, as our Lord hath spoken, vpon the sonnes of Dauid.Iniit ergo omnis multitudo pactum in domo Dei cum rege, dixitque ad eos Jojada: Ecce filius regis regnabit, sicut locutus est Dominus super filios David. 4And this is the thing that you shall do:Voi pertanto farete così:This therfore is the thing which you shal doe.Iste est ergo sermo quem facietis: 5A third part of you that come to the sabbath, of the priests, and of the Levites, and of the porters shall be at the gates: and a third part at the king’s house: and a third at the gate that is called the Foundation: but let all the rest of the people be in the courts of the house of the Lord. The third part of you that come to the Sabbath of the Priestes, and of Leuites, and of porters shal be in the gates: and a third part at the kinges house: and a third at the gate, which is called of the Fundation: but let al the rest of the common people be in the courtes of the house of our Lord.tertia pars vestrum qui veniunt ad sabbatum, sacerdotum, et Levitarum, et janitorum erit in portis: tertia vero pars ad domum regis: et tertia ad portam quæ appellatur Fundamenti: omne vero reliquum vulgus sit in atriis domus Domini.
6And let no one come into the house of the Lord, but the priests, and they that minister of the Levites: let them only come in, because they are sanctified: and let all the rest of the people keep the watches of the Lord.E nissun altro entrerà nella casa del Signore, fuori de' sacerdoti, e de' Leviti, che sono in funzione: eglino soli entreranno, perchè sono santificati: e tutto il resto della gente stia di sentinella dinanzi al Signore.Neither let anie other enter into the house of our Lord, but the Priestes, and they that minister of the Leuites: let them onlie goe in, because they are sanctified and let al the rest of the multitude obserue the watches of our Lord. 7And let the Levites be round about the king, every man with his arms; and if any other come into the temple, let him be slain; and let them be with the king, both coming in, and going out.I Leviti poi attornieranno il re tutti armati; e se alcun altro entrerà nel tempio, sia messo a morte. Ed eglino stian col re dovunque vada, o venga. And let the Leuites enuiron the king, hauing euerie one their weapons: (and if anie other shal enter into the temple, let him be slayne) and let them be with the king both coming in, and going out. 8So the Levites, and all Juda did according to all that Joiada the high priest had commanded: and they took every one his men that were under him, and that came in by the course of the sabbath, with those who had fulfilled the sabbath, and were to go out. For Joiada the high priest permitted not the companies to depart, which were accustomed to succeed one another every week.I Leviti adunque, e tutto Giuda eseguirono puntualmente gli ordini di Joiada Pontefice. The Leuites therfore, & al Iuda did according to al thinges, which Ioiada the high Priest had commanded; and they tooke euerie one the men that were vnder them, and came by the order of the Sabbath, with them that had fulfilled the Sabbath, and were to goe forth. For Ioiada the high Priest permitted not the companies to depart, which were accustomed to succede one an other euerie weeke. 9And Joiada the priest gave to the captains the spears, and the shields, and targets of king David, which he had dedicated in the house of the Lord.E Joiada Sacerdote diede ai centurioni le lance, e gli scudi, e le targhe del re David offerte da lui alla casa del Signore. And Ioiada the Priest gaue to the centurions the speares, and the shieldes, and targattes of king Dauid, which he had consecrated in the house of our Lord.Deditque Jojada sacerdos centurionibus lanceas, clypeosque et peltas regis David, quas consecraverat in domo Domini.
10And he set all the people with swords in their hands from the right side of the temple, to the left side of the temple, before the altar, and the temple, round about the king.E tutta la gente armata di spada la collocò dalla parte destra del tempio, sino al lato sinistro del tempio dinanzi all'altare, e al tempio attorno al re.And he appoynted al the people of them that held weapons on the right side of the temple, vnto the left syde of the temple, before the altar, and the temple, round about the king.Constituitque omnem populum tenentium pugiones a parte templi dextra, usque ad partem templi sinistram, coram altari et templo, per circuitum regis. 11And they brought out the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and the testimony, and gave him the law to hold in his hand, and they made him king: and Joiada the high priest and his sons anointed him: and they prayed for him, and said: God save the king.E condusser ruota il figliuolo del re, e gli cinsero il diadema, e il testimonio, e gli posero in mano il libro della legge, e lo dichiararono re. E Joiada pontefice co' suoi figliuoli lo unse: egli fecero buoni augurj, e dissero: Viva il re.And they brought forth the kinges sonne, and put the crowne vpon him, and the testimonie, and gaue the law to be in his hand, & they made him king: Ioiada also the high Priest, and his sonnes annoynted him: and they wished him wel, and said: God saue the king. 12Now when Athalia heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came in to the people, into the temple of the Lord. Which thing when Athalia had heard, to witte, the voice of them that ranne and praysed the king, she went in vnto the people, into the temple of our Lord. 13And when she saw the king standing upon the step in the entrance, and the princes, and the companies about him, and all the people of the land rejoicing, and sounding with trumpets, and playing on instruments of divers kinds, and the voice of those that praised, she rent her garments, and said: Treason, treason.E avendo veduto all'ingresso il re, che stava in luogo rilevatole i principi, e le schiere dintorno a lui, e tutto quanto il popolo in festa, che sonava le trombe, e altri varj strumenti, e udite le voci di que', che cantavan le lodi di lui, straccio le sue vesti, e disse: Congiura, congiura. And when she had seene the king standing vpon the steppe in the entrance, and the princes, and the companies about him, and al the people of the land reioysing, and sounding with trumpettes, and playing on instrumentes of diuerse kind, and the voice of them that praysed, she rent her garmentes, and sayd: Treason, treason.Cumque vidisset regem stantem super gradum in introitu, et principes, turmasque circa eum, omnemque populum terræ gaudentem, atque clangentem tubis, et diversi generis organis concinentem, vocemque laudantium, scidit vestimenta sua, et ait: Insidiæ, insidiæ.
14And Joiada the high priest going out to the captains, and the chiefs of the army, said to them: Take her forth without the precinct of the temple, and when she is without let her be killed with the sword. For the priest commanded that she should not be killed in the house of the Lord. And Ioiada the high Priest going forth to the centurions, and captaines of the armie, sayd to them: Bring her forth without the precinct of the temple, and let her be killed with the sword without. And the Priest commanded that she should not be killed in the house of our Lord. Præcepitque sacerdos ne occideretur in domo Domini, 15And they laid hold on her by the neck: and when she was come within the horse gate of the palace, they killed her there.E quelli le misero le mani sul collo: e quando ella fu entrata nella porta dei cavalli della casa reale, ivi la uccisero. And they layd handes vpon her necke: and when she was entred within the gate of the horses of the kinges house, they killed her there.et imposuerunt cervicibus ejus manus: cumque intrasset portam equorum domus regis, interfecerunt eam ibi. 16And Joiada made a covenant between himself and all the people, and the king, that they should be the people of the Lord.E Joiada strinse un patto tra se, e il popolo tutto, e il re, ch'ei sarebber popolo del Signore. And Ioiada made a couenant betwen himself, and al the people, and the king, that they would be the people of our Lord. 17And all the people went into the house of Baal, and destroyed it: and they broke down his altars and his idols: and they slew Mathan the priest of Baal before the altars. Al the people therfore entred into the house of Baal, and destroyed it: and they brake his altars and his images: Mathan also the priest of Baal they slewe before the altars.
18And Joiada appointed overseers in the house of the Lord, under the hands of the priests, and the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the Lord: to offer holocausts to the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses, with joy and singing, according to the disposition of David.E Joiada creò dei prefetti della casa del Signore subordinati ai sacerdoti, e ai Leviti, i quali erano stati distribuiti da Davidde pel servigio della casa del Signore, affinchè si offerissero al Signore gli olocausti, come sta scritto nella legge di Mosè, con cantici di allegrezza, secondo la disposizione fatta da Davidde. And Ioiada appoynted ouerseers in the house of our Lord, vnder the handes of the Priestes, & the Leuites, which Dauid distributed in the house of our Lord: that they should offer holocaustes to our Lord, as it is writen in the law of Moyses, in ioy and songes, according to the disposition of Dauid.Constituit autem Jojada præpositos in domo Domini sub manibus sacerdotum et Levitarum quos distribuit David in domo Domini, ut offerrent holocausta Domino, sicut scriptum est in lege Moysi, in gaudio et canticis, juxta dispositionem David. 19He appointed also porters in the gates of the house of the Lord, that none who was unclean in any thing should enter in.Mise ancora de' portinai alle porte della casa del Signore, affinchè nissuno vi entrasse, che avesse qualsisia immondezza. He appoynted also porters in the gates of the house of our Lord, that the vncleane in aniething should not enter in.Constituit quoque janitores in portis domus Domini, ut non ingrederetur eam immundus in omni re. 20And he took the captains of hundreds, and the most valiant men, and the chiefs of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought down the king from the house of the Lord, and brought him through the upper gate into the king’s house, and set him on the royal throne.E prese seco i centurioni, e gli uomini di valore, e i capi del popolo, e tutta la gente del paese, e fecero scendere il re dalla casa del Signore, ed entrar nella casa reale per la porta superiore, e lo collocarono sul trono regio. And he tooke the centurions, and the most valiant men and princes of the people, and al the common people of the land, and they made the king to goe downe from the house of our Lord, & to enter by the middes of the vpper gate into the kinges house, and placed him in the royal throne. 21And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet: but Athalia was slain with the sword.E tutto il popolo del paese ne fece festa, e la città stette in pace; e Athalia perì di spada. And al the people of the land reioysed, & the citie was quiet: moreouer Athalia was slayne with the sword.Lætatusque est omnis populus terræ, et urbs quievit: porro Athalia interfecta est gladio.

23:1
1. NOW IN THE SEVENTH YEAR HE WAS STRENGTHENED (by God) JOIADA. — This was a High Priest of great spirit and virtue, who restored the royal line to the kingdom, and lived 130 years, II Chronicles xxiv, 15. Some, with our Henry Samerius in the Chronology, think he was not the High Priest, but the chief of the priests in the tribe of Judah, namely of those who were scattered throughout the tribe of Judah, and whose care he took. Their reason is that in the Catalogue of High Priests, which exists in I Chronicles cap. vi, and I Esdras vii, 1, and in Josephus, lib. X Antiq. cap. xi, Joiada is not named. But the Hebrew chronicle places Joiada in the number of High Priests. Again, Josephus calls him ἀρχίερεα, and Scripture calls him Priest and "chief of the priests," and in Hebrew, first priest, and head of priests, that is, High Priest. There is added the reason that he himself restored King Joash to the kingdom and anointed the king: but this was the duty of the High Priest. Again, the commands and orders which he himself gives here to all the Priests, Levites, and the whole people in guarding the king and the temple, argue that he was the High Priest of all. Moreover, neither Josephus nor Scripture, in I Chronicles vi, and I Esdras vii, 1, recounts all the Priests, but omits some; for from King Jehoshaphat to Josiah, which was a span of 238 years, they count only four Priests, namely Ahitub, Meraioth, Zadok and Shallum; each of whom would have had to serve as Priest for 59 years, which is incredible. Joiada therefore and some others were omitted, because he was not descended from Eleazar, the first son of Aaron, to whom the Priesthood of the ancestor was due by right of primogeniture. Perhaps also Joiada, like many others, had another name. Whence some think that he who is placed among the Priests by Josephus, and is called Sedeas, is Joiada, and that the following Julus is Zechariah the son of Joiada. For Zechariah succeeded his father Joiada in the Priesthood, as Abulensis, Torniellus and others think, although the Hebrew chronicle which Genebrardus and Salianus follow asserts that Pedaiah succeeded Joiada. Joiada therefore restored religion equally with the kingdom of Judah, and therefore was buried by King Joash after his death in the sepulchre of kings. Whence the Hebrew chronicle gives this epitaph and eulogy to Joiada: "Joiada grew old full of days, and died when he was 130 years old. Namely, when the corruption (of idolatry) and ruin arose in the days of Solomon, Joiada was born at the same time to correct it." For Joiada was born in the 35th year of the reign of Solomon, but died in the 28th year of Joash king of Judah. Thus Salianus.
23:5
23:6
6. LET THE REST OF THE PEOPLE (both of the Levites and of the faithful people) KEEP THE WATCHES OF THE LORD, — that is, perform their duty in the court of the house of the Lord, or temple; namely so that if any tumult should arise from the soldiers whom Athaliah had sent to kill Joash, they themselves might stop them, hinder and repel them. For this reason he had commanded in verse 5, saying: "Let the rest of the people be in the courts of the house of the Lord;" namely in the court, which was as it were the temple of the laity, and was divided into various smaller courts. For Joiada wished the young boy king to be protected not only by the guard of the Levites, but also by that of the faithful people, lest any violence or fraud should be done to him by Athaliah his wicked grandmother.
23:20
20. THE UPPER GATE. — This was the gate of the temple, which led to the king's palace. It is called "upper" because the royal residence was higher, from which in the lower place situated through this gate one ascended into the temple, as is clear from IV Kings xi, 6 and 19. The same gate in verse 5 is called "of the foundation," because it was erected in the very foundations of the temple, that is in the Millo: thus Villalpandus, page 219; this gate was ordered to be guarded before the others, because through it Athaliah was going to come from the royal residence into the temple with her soldier and attendant.
