Bull erecting the Archconfraternity of Christian Doctrine in Rome
Council of Trent and the Popes. Erection of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine into an Archconfraternity in the Basilica of St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles, of the City, with clarifications of indulgences and privileges.
Paul, Pope V, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.
1 From the pastoral office entrusted to us, to pious places which daily receive greater increases in spiritual and temporal matters for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, we grant further assistance and more ample privileges, lest we omit anything of those things which appear to conduce to the propagation of Christian religion.
2 § 1. For these reasons, considering that by the best right it was established by the sacred Council of Trent 1 and by our predecessor Supreme Pontiffs, and has now for many 2 years been observed for the greatest benefit of God's Church, that children on individual Sundays and other feast days should be taught the rudiments of faith, obedience toward God and parents, and other Christian virtues by those to whom this pertains, so that in this way those who are by nature prone to follow the pleasures of the world, being trained in Christian piety, advancing from virtue to virtue, might become such as would be suitable ministers for reforming the morals of Christian people and for the increase of the Catholic faith;
3 § 2. And when certain men of probity, inflamed with the zeal of charity for the increase of divine worship in this our beloved City, mother and teacher of others, after the Council of Trent was published, had begun to teach Christian doctrine with the greatest piety and diligence to boys and adults of all kinds in certain churches, this pious work, with the Lord providing, in a short space of time received such increases that a Congregation under the name of Christian Doctrine was already instituted some time ago, from which, although some live only in common with their superior in the church of St. Agatha in the region beyond the Tiber, yet all come together under one protector, and under one president have applied themselves and apply themselves with careful diligence to this most salutary work on individual feast days:
4 § 3. We, for the sake of our pastoral office, embracing from our heart this pious and necessary work for Christian society, from which most abundant fruits have hitherto come forth and we hope will come forth much more abundantly hereafter, and desiring that it be increased more and more each day, the aforesaid Congregation instituted in the City as well as the individual persons and churches thereof (namely St. Martin in the region of Are- 3
5 In the City there was instituted not only a congregation of laypeople but also of clerics.
6 Here the Pontiff erects the said Confraternity into an Archconfraternity in the Basilica of St. Peter of the City.
7 na, St. Agatha in the region beyond the Tiber) received under our and the Apostolic See's protection, granted to the same Congregation by apostolic authority, by our own motion and from certain knowledge, and from the fullness of apostolic power, in the most celebrated Basilica of the Prince of the Apostles of the City, the Congregation of Christian Doctrine of this kind we erect and institute by apostolic authority, by the tenor of the present, perpetually into an archconfraternity; And for its § 4. We constitute and appoint as rector, perpetual administrator and protector thereof our beloved son Jerome, presbyter cardinal, called Pamphilii, of the title of St. Blaise, and for the time being existing in the City and its district as the Roman Pontiff's vicar; To the same archconfraternity § 5. And to the archconfraternity thus erected and instituted we grant to the brothers existing for the time being the faculty of aggregating other confraternities of the same Christian doctrine to the archconfraternity and of communicating to them the indulgences...
8 We constitute and appoint as perpetual administrator and protector our beloved son Jerome, presbyter cardinal of the title of St. Blaise, called Pamphilii, and for the time being existing in the City and its district as vicar of the Roman Pontiff, by this present document; To the same archi- § 5. And to the same archconfraternity we grant faculty otherwise to the brothers existing for the time being in the archconfraternities...

10 canonically erected and instituted in any part of the world and to be instituted, and to communicate to them the privileges, indults, favors, exemptions, graces and indulgences written below, granted to itself by us, and to be granted for the time being by the Apostolic See;
11 § 6. And also with the consent of the aforesaid administrator and protector, we grant and impart to them the license, faculty and authority of drawing up whatever statutes concern the happy governance and government of the said archconfraternity (lawful however and honest, and in no way contrary to the sacred canons and decrees of the aforesaid council and apostolic constitutions), and of changing those thus drawn up according to the quality of things and times, in whole or in part, and as often as need shall be, and of enacting others anew in their place.
12 § 7. But so that the devotion of Christian faithful may be increased more and more in the exercise of this pious work, by the mercy of Almighty God and by the authority of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, to all and each of the Christian faithful of either sex, truly penitent and confessed and refreshed by holy Communion, who as pious ministers, workers and confraternity members shall enter the said archconfraternity, on the first day of their entrance, or on that day on which they shall be enrolled in the said archconfraternity, a plenary

14 | 8. Likewise to those same persons thus described, who, being truly penitent and having confessed, shall have received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist on the feast which shall be chosen by the said archconfraternity itself and by other confraternities aggregated or to be aggregated as their principal and respective feast, also a plenary indulgence;
15 | 9. And to those who, being truly penitent and having confessed, shall have received the said most holy sacrament of the Eucharist, or, being unable to do so, shall have invoked the name of Jesus at least in their heart with contrite spirit at the hour of death, we likewise grant by the said authority, by the tenor of these presents, a plenary remission and indulgence of all their sins;
16 10. Furthermore to the same confraternity members who, being truly penitent and having confessed, shall have received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist once in each month, seven years and as many forty-day periods;
17 11. And to those who shall have been instrumental in causing children, servants, or any other persons to go to learn Christian doctrine, two hundred days;
18 12. Those who shall have taught this doctrine in the churches of the stations of the City on the appointed days, and also those who shall have come to learn the same, shall obtain the same indulgences which they would obtain and be able to obtain if they personally visited the churches of the stations;
19 § 13. The same indulgences are also granted to the visitors of the said archconfraternity, who by virtue of the office committed to them shall visit the schools which they are able to visit on that day;

To the same confraternity members who shall have gone outside the city to teach it through villages and towns, ten years; | 21. Likewise to the same confraternity members who shall have attended the disputations which are accustomed to be held in the schools of the said archconfraternity, two hundred days;
26 § 22. To all and each of the faithful who for half an hour shall have studied doctrine either for the purpose of teaching or learning, one hundred days;
27 § 23. To the same confraternity members who shall have visited the sick of the said archconfraternity, as often as they do so, two hundred days;
28 § 24. As often as they shall have accompanied the true most holy sacrament of the Eucharist while it is being brought to the sick, seven years; | 25. And to the same confraternity members who shall have accompanied the bodies of deceased brothers and sisters to burial, or shall have attended their funerals, anniversary offices, or other services celebrated for them, pouring forth prayers for their souls, three years;
29 26. And as often as they shall have attended the divine offices and public or private congregations of the said archconfraternity, two hundred days;
30 § 27. And they shall obtain the same indulgence whenever they shall have attended processions prescribed by the local Ordinaries under the banner of the said archconfraternity;
31 § 28. Likewise to all and each of the faithful of either sex and of any age accustomed to gather in the said schools to learn Christian doctrine, who shall have confessed their sins on any feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or on another feast to be determined by the superiors of the said congregation, three years; but to those who are fit to communicate, if they shall have devoutly received the said sacrament of the Eucharist, five years;
32 29. Furthermore, on any day when the aggregation is published in any city or land, to all and each of the confraternity members of both sexes of the said confraternity, truly penitent, confessed and having received communion, we mercifully grant and remit in the Lord seven years and as many forty-day periods of the penances imposed on them or otherwise in any way due.
33 § 30. We therefore declare that it is our intention that the aforesaid indulgences, graces and indults be understood and granted to any4 confraternity canonically erected or to be erected in any

And at processions to be prescribed by the Ordinaries. Learning Christian doctrine and having received communion on the feast day appointed for each month. Confraternity members having received communion on the day when the aggregation is published in any land. Declaration that also confraternities to be aggregated shall enjoy these indulgences. Derogation that the aggregation of one confraternity in any diocese suffices so that the others to be erected there by the Ordinary may be participants. Derogation of contrary provisions. Authenticity of transcripts. Derogation of contrary provisions. In any part of the world, immediately and to the aforesaid archconfraternity, according to the constitution of our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Clement VIII, shall have been aggregated, nor can it in any way be a participant in the aforesaid graces and indulgences without such aggregation. | 31. Nevertheless declaring that, when one confraternity of the said Christian doctrine of one city shall have been aggregated, all the others of both sexes erected and to be erected by the Ordinary of the place are understood and shall be entirely aggregated, and shall be participants in the same indulgences and graces aforesaid.
35 32. Notwithstanding any apostolic constitutions and ordinances, and all other contrary provisions whatsoever.
36 33. We will, however, that to transcripts of the present document, subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of the said archconfraternity, the same faith be given as would be given to the present document, if it were exhibited or shown.

2 § 1. Per queste cause, considerando che noi per ottimo diritto dal sacro Concilio Tridentino 1 e dai sommi Pontefici nostri predecessori è stato stabilito, e già da molti 2 anni fa è stato osservato a grandissimo vantaggio della Chiesa di Dio, che i fanciulli in ogni domenica e negli altri giorni festivi fossero istruiti nei rudimenti della fede, nell'obbedienza verso Dio e i genitori, e nelle altre virtù cristiane da coloro ai quali spetta, affinché in questo modo, coloro che per natura sono propensi a seguire i piaceri del mondo, educati nella pietà cristiana, progredendo di virtù in virtù, divenissero tali da essere idonei ministri per la riforma dei costumi del popolo cristiano e per l'incremento della fede cattolica;
