Constitution condemning Jansenist doctrine on respectful silence

Constitution of Pope Clement XI ·

BULL VINEAM DOMINI

1 formulary. One must not subscribe to it by word only, but by heart.

2 Clement, Bishop, servant of the servants of God, to all the faithful of Christ, greeting and apostolic blessing.

3 The vineyard of the Lord of hosts, which is the Catholic Church, entrusted to us by divine disposition for the office of apostolic service, we are constantly striving to guard and cultivate with all zeal and diligence. Those things which we know have been established by the Roman Pontiffs, our predecessors, with prudent and salutary counsel for the purpose of rooting out completely the pernicious weeds of novelties growing therein, we willingly strengthen with the protection of our apostolic authority, so that, with the machinations of the Enemy of Man cast down, they may always be observed more firmly and exactly. We also interpose the other parts of our solicitude and providence, as, having weighed all things with the scale of mature consideration, we judge it to be expedient in the Lord for the faithful and safe custody of orthodox truth, as well as for the salvation of souls redeemed by the precious blood of the only-begotten Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ.

4 Indeed, after our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Innocent X, by a certain Constitution issued by him on this matter, had duly condemned by apostolic judgment five famous propositions excerpted from the book of Cornelius Jansen, Bishop of Ypres, which is entitled Augustinus, our predecessor of blessed memory, Pope Alexander VII, in order to abolish such already condemned errors completely from the minds of Christ's faithful and to utterly overturn the machinations of those who disturb public tranquility, concealed with subtle cunning, confirmed the aforesaid Constitution of his predecessor Innocent, with its entire tenor inserted, and strengthened it by the addition of new declarations, issued by him likewise a Constitution on this matter, the tenor of which is as follows, namely1:

5 Alexander, Bishop, servant of the servants of God, to all the faithful of Christ, greeting and apostolic blessing.

6 Raised to the holy seat of blessed Peter and to the governance of the universal Church by the inscrutable disposition of divine providence, with no merits of our own contributing thereto, we have deemed nothing more important from the duty of our office than to provide opportunely, with the power entrusted to us by God, for the integrity of our holy faith and of the sacred dogmas. And although those things which have been abundantly defined by apostolic Constitutions have no need whatsoever of new decision or declaration, yet because some disturbers of public tranquility do not fear to call them into question or to weaken them by crafty interpretations, we have judged that the remedy of apostolic authority ought not to be delayed, lest this disease spread more widely.

7 There was issued indeed formerly by our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Innocent X, a Constitution, Declaration and Definition, the tenor of which is as follows, namely:

8 Innocent, Bishop, servant of the servants of God, to all the faithful of Christ, greeting and apostolic blessing.

9 Upon the occasion of the printing of a book entitled Augustinus by Cornelius Jansen, Bishop of Ypres, there arose among his other opinions, especially in the Gallic regions, a controversy concerning five of them. Many bishops of the Gallic regions pressed us to examine those propositions submitted to us and to render a certain and clear judgment concerning each one of them. The tenor of the aforesaid propositions is as follows. First: Some precepts of God are impossible for the just who will and strive according to the present powers which they have; and grace is lacking to them by which they might become possible. Second: Interior grace in the state of fallen nature is never resisted. Third: In the state of fallen nature, freedom from necessity is not required in man for meriting and demeriting, but freedom from coercion suffices. Fourth: The Semipelagians admitted2 the necessity of interior prevenient grace for individual acts, even for the beginning of faith, and in this they were heretical, in that they wished that grace to be such as could be resisted or obeyed by human will. Fifth: It is Semipelagian to say that Christ died for all men absolutely, or shed his blood for all.

10 We, to whom among the manifold cares which continually occupy our mind, it is especially dear to the heart that the Church of God committed to Us from on high, purged of the errors of depraved opinions, may safely wage war, and like a ship in a tranquil sea, with all the waves and storms of tempests calmed, may navigate securely and arrive at the desired port of salvation, on account of the gravity of the matter before certain Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, gathered together for this purpose repeatedly and specially, and before many Masters in Sacred Theology, caused the same five propositions, as above, offered to Us to be examined singly with diligence, and their votes, both spoken and written, We have maturely considered, and the same masters, in various congregations held before Us, We have heard at length discussing these matters and each of them differently. Since moreover from the beginning of such a discussion, We had enjoined the prayers of many of the faithful of Christ, both privately and publicly, to implore Divine aid; afterwards, the same prayers being repeated more fervently and the assistance of the Holy Spirit being earnestly implored by Us, at length, Divine Providence favoring, We have arrived at the underwritten declaration and definition.

11 The first of the aforesaid propositions: "Some precepts of God are impossible to the just who will and strive according to the present powers which they have; and grace is lacking to them by which they might become possible": We declare to be rash, impious, blasphemous, condemned by anathema and heretical, and We condemn it as such. The second: "Interior grace in the state of fallen nature is never resisted": We declare to be heretical, and We condemn it as such. The third: "In the state of fallen nature, freedom from necessity is not required in man for meriting and demeriting, but freedom from coercion suffices": We declare to be heretical, and We condemn it as such. The fourth: "The Semipelagians admitted the necessity of interior prevenient grace for individual acts, even for the beginning of faith, and in this they were heretical, in that they wished that grace to be such as human will could resist or obey": We declare to be false and heretical, and We condemn it as such. The fifth: "It is Semipelagian to say that Christ died or shed His blood for all men absolutely": We declare to be false, rash, and scandalous, and understood in the sense that Christ died for the salvation of the predestined only; impious, blasphemous, insulting, derogatory to Divine mercy, and heretical, and We condemn it as such.

12 We therefore command all the faithful of Christ of both sexes, that they presume not to feel, teach, and preach otherwise concerning the said propositions than is contained in this our present declaration and definition, under the censures and penalties against heretics and their supporters expressed in law. We likewise enjoin all Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, and other Ordinaries of places, as well as Inquisitors of heretical depravity, that they altogether restrain and suppress any contradictors and rebels whatsoever by the aforesaid censures and penalties, and by other remedies of law and fact as appropriate, invoking also for this purpose, if need be, the aid of the secular arm.

13 We intend, however, by this declaration and definition made concerning the aforesaid five propositions, in no way to approve any other opinions which are contained in the aforesaid book of Cornelius Jansenius. Given at Rome at

2 Clemens Episcopus servus servorum Dei Universis Christi Fidelibus Salutem et Apostolicam Benedictionem.

3 Vineam Domini Sabaoth, quae est Catholica Ecclesia, pro commisso Nobis divinitus Apostolicœ servitutis munere custodire , atque excolere omni studio atque industria , jugiter satagentes, ea, quae a Romanis Pontificibus, prœdecessoribus nostris ad succrescentes in illa perniciosarum novitatum vêpres radicitus evellendos, prudenti salubrique consilio constituta esse noscuntur, ut quibuscunque Inimici Hominis molitionibus dejectis, firmius semper atque exactius observentur, Apostolici muniminis nostri praesidio libenter roboramus, atque alias desuper solicitudinis, et providentiae nostrae partes interponimus , sicut omnibus maturae considerationis trutina perpensis, ad fidelem ac tutam orthodoxœ veritatis custodiam, necnon Animarum pretioso Unigeniti Dei Filii Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Sanguine redemptarum salutem expedire in Domino arbitramur.

4 Sane postquam fel. rec. Innocentius Papa X praedecessor noster per quamdam suam desuper editam Constitutionem quinque famosas Propositiones ex libro Cornelii Jansenii Episcopi Iprensis, oui titulus AugustinuSy excerptas Apostolici censura judicii rite confixerat, rec. mem. Alexander Papa VII etiam praedecessor noster ad ejusmodi jam damnatos errores e Christi fîdelium mentibus prorsus abolendos, publicaeque tranquillitatis perturbatorum subtili tectas calliditate machinationes penitus evertendas, praedictam Innocentii praedecessoris Constitutionem, toto illius inserto tenore, confîrmavit, novarumque declarationum accessione constabilivit, sua in id pariter édita Constitutione tenoris qui sequitur, videlicet1 :

5 Alexander Episcopus servus servorum Dei.

8 Innocentius Episcopus * servus servorum Dei.

Prima. Aliqua Dei praecepta hominibus justis volentibus, et conantibus secundum prœsentes, quas habent vires, sunt impossibilia ; deest quoque illis Gratia, qua possibilia fiant. Secunda : Interiori Gratiae in statu naturae lapsae nunquam resistitur. Tertia. Ad merendum et demerendum in statu naturae lapsae non requiritur in homine libertas a necessitate, sed sufficit libertas a coactione. Quarta.

Dato a Roma presso
