LETTERA ENCICLICA DI SUA SANTITÀ LEONE PP. XIII

1 Lo scorso anno, come tutti sapete, con una Nostra lettera Enciclica abbiamo decretato che in ogni parte del mondo cattolico, per ottenere il soccorso celeste a favore della Chiesa messa a così dure prove, si onorasse la possente Madre di Dio secondo il santissimo rito del Rosario durante tutto il mese di ottobre. Ciò facendo, abbiamo seguito una Nostra ispirazione e l’esempio dei Nostri Predecessori che nei tempi più difficili della Chiesa, con uno zelo di pietà sempre crescente, ebbero la consuetudine di cercare un rifugio presso l’Augusta Vergine e implorare il suo aiuto con fervide preghiere.

2 La Nostra volontà è stata dovunque assecondata con un tal fervore ed una tale concordia degli animi che ne è risultata una prova luminosa dell’ardore per la religione e per la pietà che esiste nel popolo cristiano, e della speranza che tutti ripongono nella protezione celeste della Vergine Maria. Questo fervore di pietà e di fede dichiarata ha recato un sollievo ed una grande consolazione al Nostro cuore, oppresso da tante gravi preoccupazioni e da tanti mali, e Ci ha dato la forza per sopportare, se così vorrà Iddio, mali anche peggiori. Infatti, mentre lo spirito di preghiera si spande sopra la casa di Davide e sopra gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, Noi siamo portati a sperare che certamente un giorno Iddio Ci esaudirà: sentendo pietà per le vicissitudini della sua Chiesa, Egli ascolterà infine le preghiere di coloro che Lo implorano per mezzo di Colei, che ha voluto fosse la dispensatrice delle grazie celesti.

3 Per la qual cosa, dinanzi alla permanenza delle cause che Ci hanno portato a stimolare la pietà pubblica nell’anno passato, Noi, come abbiamo detto, abbiamo ritenuto Nostro dovere, Venerabili Fratelli, di esortare anche nel corrente anno i popoli cristiani a perseverare in questo modo di preghiere e in queste formule dette del Rosario di Maria, e a meritare così l’efficace protezione della possente Madre di Dio. Poiché i nemici del nome cristiano mettono così grande ostinazione nei loro disegni, i difensori non debbono avere una volontà meno costante, quando specialmente il soccorso celeste e i benefici che Dio ci reca sono spesso il frutto della nostra perseveranza.

4 È opportuno rievocare qui l’esempio di quella grande Giuditta, immagine della Vergine benefattrice, che represse l’impazienza stolta dei Giudei che volevano stabilire a loro giudizio il giorno in cui Dio doveva soccorrere la città oppressa. Giova ancora ricordare l’esempio degli Apostoli, che hanno aspettato il dono immenso dello Spirito Santo a loro promesso, perseverando unanimemente nella preghiera con Maria, Madre di Gesù.

5 Anche ora, veramente, si tratta di un’impresa ardua e di grande importanza, quella di umiliare la potenza dell’antico astuto nemico, tracotante nella sua forza, e di restituire la libertà alla Chiesa ed al suo Capo; di conservare e di proteggere i baluardi sui quali riposano la sicurezza e la salvezza della società umana. Pertanto conviene vigilare perché, in questi giorni di lutto per la Chiesa, il santo costume del Rosario di Maria sia osservato con zelo e pietà, tanto più che queste preghiere, essendo composte in modo da rievocare nel loro ordine tutti i misteri della nostra salute, sono essenzialmente appropriate a suscitare lo spirito di pietà.

6 Per ciò che riguarda l’Italia è oggi soprattutto necessario implorare con la preghiera del Rosario l’aiuto della potentissima Vergine, poiché una calamità impensata non solo incombe, ma è già presente tra noi. Si tratta della peste asiatica che, passando i limiti che la natura, seguendo la volontà di Dio, pareva assegnarle, ha invaso i porti più frequentati della Francia e di là le regioni limitrofe dell’Italia. Dobbiamo dunque cercare un rifugio presso Maria, presso Colei che la Chiesa chiama, a giusto titolo e a buon diritto, la salutare, l’ausiliatrice, la protettrice, affinché, propizia alle preghiere che Le sono gradite, Ella si degni di apportarci il soccorso implorato di cacciare lontano da noi l’impuro flagello.

7 Pertanto all’avvicinarsi del mese di ottobre, mese in cui si compiono nel mondo cattolico le solennità consacrate a Maria Vergine del Rosario, Noi abbiamo deciso di rinnovare, anche quest’anno, tutte le prescrizioni stabilite per lo scorso anno. Decretiamo quindi e ordiniamo che dal primo giorno di ottobre al secondo giorno di novembre in tutte le Chiese parrocchiali, in tutti gli Oratori pubblici dedicati alla Madre di Dio, o anche in altri a scelta dell’Ordinario, si recitino quotidianamente le cinque decine del Rosario aggiungendovi le Litanie: se il Rosario si recita la mattina, si celebri contemporaneamente la Santa Messa; se nelle ore pomeridiane, si esponga all’adorazione il Santissimo Sacramento e in seguito i presenti siano purificati secondo il rito. Noi desideriamo inoltre che le Confraternite del Santissimo Rosario, dovunque, dove le leggi civili lo permettono, facciano una solenne processione per le vie ad incremento della pubblica pietà.

8 Per aprire alla pietà cristiana i tesori celesti della Chiesa, rinnoviamo tutte le Indulgenze concesse nel passato anno. A tutti coloro che nei giorni prescritti avranno assistito alla recita pubblica del Rosario e che avranno pregato secondo la Nostra intenzione, e pure a coloro che, impediti da una causa legittima, avranno fatto questo in privato, concediamo per ciascuna volta una Indulgenza presso Dio di sette anni e di sette quarantene. A coloro poi che nel tempo predetto avranno compiuto questi esercizi almeno dieci volte, sia pubblicamente nelle Chiese, sia per giusti motivi nell’interno delle loro case, e che si saranno confessati e comunicati, concediamo dal tesoro della Chiesa la grazia plenaria dei loro peccati. Concediamo pure questa grazia plenaria dei peccati e la remissione delle pene a tutti coloro che, sia nel giorno stesso della Beata Vergine del Rosario, sia in un giorno qualunque dell’ottava seguente, parteciperanno con l’anima purificata al divino banchetto, e avranno supplicato Dio e la Sua Madre Santissima secondo la Nostra intenzione in un edificio sacro al Signore.

9 Volendo infine provvedere a coloro che vivono in campagna e che, specialmente nel mese di ottobre, sono impegnati nel lavoro dei campi, concediamo che tutto ciò che abbiamo qui sopra decretato, come pure le sacre Indulgenze da guadagnarsi nel mese di ottobre, possa essere differito ai mesi successivi di novembre e di dicembre, secondo la decisione prudente degli Ordinari.

10 Non dubitiamo, Venerabili Fratelli, che i Nostri sforzi saranno coronati da frutti ricchi ed abbondanti, soprattutto se ciò che Noi abbiamo piantato e che la Vostra sollecitudine avrà irrigato, riceverà dal cielo l’abbondanza della grazia di Dio per il suo sviluppo.

11 Teniamo per certo che il popolo cristiano si mostrerà obbediente alla Nostra parola ed alla Nostra autorità Apostolica con quella fede e quel fervore di pietà di cui diede splendida testimonianza lo scorso anno.

12 Voglia la Patrona celeste, invocata con la preghiera del Rosario, assisterci propizia, e far sì che, rimosso ogni contrasto di opinioni, e restaurato il cristianesimo in tutte le parti del mondo, Noi otteniamo da Dio la tranquillità desiderata per la Chiesa.

13 Come pegno di questo beneficio a Voi, al Vostro Clero e ai popoli affidati alle Vostre cure, impartiamo con amore la Benedizione Apostolica.

SUPERIORE ANNOENCYCLICAL OF POPE LEO XIII ON THE RECITATION OF THE ROSARY

0a To All Our Venerable Brethren the Patriarchs, Primates, Archbishops, and Bishops of the Catholic World in the Grace and Communion of the Apostolic See.

0b Venerable Brethren, Health and Apostolic Benediction.

1 Last year, as each of you is aware, We decreed by an Encyclical Letter that, to win the help of Heaven for the Church in her trials, the great Mother of God should be honoured by the means of the most holy Rosary during the whole of the month of October. In this We followed both Our own impulse and the example of Our predecessors, who in times of difficulty were wont to have recourse with increased fervour to the Blessed Virgin, and to seek her aid with special prayers. That wish of Ours has been complied with, with such a willingness and unanimity that it is more than ever apparent how real is the religion and how great is the fervour of the Christian peoples, and how great is the trust everywhere placed in the heavenly patronage of the Virgin Mary. For Us, weighed down with the burden of such and so great trials and evils, We confess that the sight of such intensity of open piety and faith has been a great consolation, and even gives Us new courage for the facing, if that be the wish of God, of still greater trials. Indeed, from the spirit of prayer which is poured out over the house of David and the dwellers in Jerusalem, we have a confident hope that God will at length let Himself be touched and have pity upon the state of His Church, and give ear to the prayers coming to Him through her whom He has chosen to be the dispenser of all heavenly graces.

2 For these reasons, therefore, with the same causes in existence which impelled Us last year, as We have said, to rouse the piety of all, We have deemed it Our duty to exhort again this year the people of Christendom to persevere in that method and formula of prayer known as the Rosary of Mary, and thereby to merit the powerful patronage of the great Mother of God. In as much as the enemies of Christianity are so stubborn in their aims, its defenders must be equally staunch, especially as the heavenly help and the benefits which are bestowed on us by God are the more usually the fruits of our perseverance. It is good to recall to memory the example of that illustrious widow, Judith - a type of the Blessed Virgin - who curbed the ill-judged impatience of the Jews when they attempted to fix, according to their own judgment, the day appointed by God for the deliverance of His city. The example should also be borne in mind of the Apostles, who awaited the supreme gift promised unto them of the Paraclete, and persevered unanimously in prayer with Mary the Mother of Jesus. For it is indeed, an arduous and exceeding weighty matter that is now in hand: it is to humiliate an old and most subtle enemy in the spread-out array of his power; to win back the freedom of the Church and of her Head; to preserve and secure the fortifications within which should rest in peace the safety and weal of human society. Care must be taken, therefore, that, in these times of mourning for the Church, the most holy devotion of the Rosary of Mary be assiduously and piously observed, the more so that this method of prayer being so arranged as to recall in turn all the mysteries of our salvation, is eminently fitted to foster the spirit of piety.

3 With respect to Italy, it is now most necessary to implore the intercessionof the most powerful Virgin through the medium of the Rosary, since amisfortune, and not an imaginary one, is threatening-nay, rather is among us.The Asiatic cholera, having, under God's will, crossed the boundary within whichnature seemed to have confined it, has spread through the crowded shores of aFrench port, and thence to the neighbouring districts of Italian soil. - To Mary,therefore, we must fly - to her whom rightly and justly the Church entitles thedispenser of saving, aiding, and protecting gifts - that she, graciouslyhearkening to our prayers, may grant us the help they besought, and drive farfrom us the unclean plague.

4 We have therefore resolved that in this coming month of October, in which the sacred devotions to Our Virgin Lady of the Rosary are solemnised throughout the Catholic world, all the devotions shall again be observed which were commanded by Us this time last year. - We therefore decree and make order that from the 1st of October to the 2nd of November following in all the parish churches [curialibus templis], in all public churches dedicated to the Mother of God, or in such as are appointed by the Ordinary, five decades at least of the Rosary be recited, together with the Litany. If in the morning, the Holy Sacrifice will take place during these prayers; if in the evening, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for the adoration of the faithful; after which those present will receivethe customary Benediction. We desire that, wherever it be lawful, the localconfraternity of the Rosary should make a solemn procession through the streetsas a public manifestation of religious devotion.

5 That the heavenly treasures of the Church may be thrown open to all, We hereby renew every Indulgence granted by Us last year. To all those, therefore, who shall have assisted on the prescribed days at the public recital of the Rosary, and have prayed for Our intentions - to all those also who from legitimate causes shall have been compelled to do so in private - We grant for each occasion an Indulgence of seven years and seven times forty days. To those who, in the prescribed space of time shall have performed these devotions at least ten times - either publicly in the churches or from just causes in the privacy of their homes - and shall have expiated their sins by confession and have received Communion at the altar, We grant from the treasury of the Church a Plenary Indulgence. We also grant this full forgiveness of sins and plenary remission of punishment to all those who, either on the feast day itself of Our Blessed Lady of the Rosary, or on any day within the subsequent eight days, shall have washed the stains from their souls and have holily partaken of the Divine banquet, and shall have also prayed in any church to God and His most holy Mother for Our intentions. As We desire also to consult the interests of those who live in country districts, and are hindered, especially in the month of October, by their agricultural labours, We permit all We have above decreed, and also the holy Indulgences gainable in the month of October, to be postponed to the following months of November or December, according to the prudent decision of the Ordinaries.

6 We doubt not, Venerable Brethren, that rich and abundant fruits will be theresult of these efforts, especially if God, by the bestowal of His heavenlygraces, bring an added increase to the fields planted by Us and watered by yourzeal. We are certain that the faithful of Christendom will hearken to theutterance of Our Apostolic authority with the same fervour of faith and piety ofwhich they gave most ample evidence last year. May our Heavenly Patroness,invoked by usthrough the Rosary, graciously be with us and obtain that, all disagreements of opinion being removed and Christianity restored throughout the world, we may obtain from God the wished for peace in the Church. - In pledge of that boon, to you, your clergy, and the flock entrusted to your care, We lovingly bestow the Apostolic Benediction.

5 Ut vero christianae pietati caelestes Ecclesiae thesauri recludantur, Indulgentias singulas, quas superiore anno largiti sumus, renovamus. Omnibus videlicet qui statis diebus publicae Rosarii recitationi interfuerint, et ad mentem Nostram oraverint, et Jais pariter qui legitima causa impediti privatim haec egerint, septem annorum itemque septem quadragenarum apud Deum indulgentiam singulis vicibus concedimus. 7 Non dubitamus, Venerabiles Fratres, quin curis hisce Nostris uberes et copiosi fructus respondeant, praesertim si quae Nos plantamus, et vestra sollicitudo rigaverit, iis Deus gratiarum suarum largitione de caelo afferat incrementum. Pro certo quidem habemus populum christianum futurum dicto audientem Apostolicae auctoritati Nostrae eo fidei et pietatis fervore, cuius praeterito anno amplissimum dedit documentum.
